I didn’t get a good look at Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial but I did see San Antonio Veterans Memorial without PGH Texas 2020 Top 10 Sahara Jones who was on an official visit. One of the most exciting games was between Converse Judson and San Antonio Johnson to help open up the event and their game 2 sort of set the stage but I’ll break down both teams as well as SA Veterans Memorial opening with SA Johnson
Ja’Shelle JohnsonI have to start with JJ because every time I see Ja’Shelle Johnson, I know there will be “Good Times” on the court, and that will never get old. I first caught her at the Tyrone Johnson Showcase, I guess a couple of years ago, and was overly impressed with her then but now, I have no idea how high she will rise because of her energy and ability to do what she’s doing as a freshman but #D1Lock is set. She sees the floor, her explosiveness with the ball gives her multiple options on offense, she shoots the mid to long well, but her upside is just through the roof. She and fellow freshmen Angel Tumbarello are on my 2023 Watch List, I already dropped something on Angel earlier on my blog
Madelyn GarzaAdding players to the Rankings and Watch Lists from this event has kept me busy, I don’t recall seeing 2022 Madelyn Garza but she’s at that “magic number” which one more time is 6’0 because I get calls, emails, whatever throughout the year, even as late as August from college coaches asking about posts or players around her size. She has a strong body, rebounds well on both ends, runs the floor and finishes consistently. Her shot is fluid when she faces the basket, nice form and watching her slice to the basket from the wing tells me a lot about her upside. I love surprises, well on the court and Sierra McDermed is definitely on my radar, both players have been added to 2022 Watch List, and what I wrote down for her was “everything” because she scores almost anyway imaginable but on top of that, she defends well. She gets it, but importantly she gives “it” right back at you and that pull-up in transition with defenders hanging on her told me a lot, real early
