The presence of girls basketball is continually growing as seen with the NCAA Women’s Final Four being held in Tampa in 2008, 2015, and 2019. You’ll notice there’s a trend that Tampa Bay Tech, Carollwood Day, and Plant are expected to have BIG years. Here is a look at some of my favorite players in the pool of Hillsborough County Florida hoopers (in order of class):
Nabaweeyah McGill, Sr. F, Carrollwood Day – The 6-foot-2 McGill has been a force over her career on a very, very talented team. She averaged 12 points and 8.6 rebounds per game on a stacked team, so her value isn’t fully reflected in her averages. Weeyah is still unsigned, and she will continue getting offers as a top player in the state.
Tiasia McMillan, Sr. F, Carrollwood Day – Tiasia is another 6-footer from CDS who can score and rebound at an elite level. She averaged 10.6 points and 7.7 boards per contest on the loaded Patriots squad. Tiasia is committed to Division 1 Colgate after receiving a lot of attention from plenty of other high level programs.
Tarriyonna Gary, Sr. G/F, Carrollwood Day – CDS has one of the best frontcourts in the state, but they aren’t lacking in the backcourt either. Tarriyonna Gary is another Division 1 commit (Towson) who has a very versatile game. She put together a stat line of 13.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game in their 27-2 campaign in 2018-2019.
Mykaylyn Davis, Sr. G, Seffner Christian – KK Davis is arguably the best passer in the state. She averaged 8.2 dimes per game with 9.1 points and 4 steals to boot on another team who will be fun to watch. She is committed to Division 1 Western Carolina of the Southern Conference.
Kendal Cheesman, Jr. C, Plant – This 6-foot-2 post finished with 13.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game last season to go along with 2.6 swats. Kendal’s team will look to be at full strength this season as a loaded 7A team. Keep your eye on her as she has worked hard to get better, and will be on more college’s radars.
Jasmine Peaks, Jr. G, Tampa Bay Tech – No Hillsborough County list would be complete without the mention of TBT. Jasmine is a fantastic guard in her ability to dish the rock, play tough defense, and score at will. She had averages of 12.2 ppg and 4.5 apg, and has improved her game a ton this summer.
Ary Dizon, Jr. C, Carrollwood Day – Yet again, another CDS player. Aryana is a 6-foot-2 post that has made huge strides in her game over the last year. She scored 10.6 points and snagged 5.4 boards per contest last season, and I expect her to improve those numbers even with the aforementioned depth of talent on their team.
Nyla Jean, Jr. G, Plant – The Plant Panthers are a team to keep an eye on as well. Nyla leads their backcourt as a quick, athletic guard. She had 3 steals, 4 assists, and 11.4 points per game last year. Nyla will continue getting her offers as she is a hard-working player who continues to excel.
Janiah Barker, So. F, Tampa Bay Tech – Janiah is going to have an amazing career that everyone is going to hear about, and she has already started with an impressive freshman season. She averaged 12.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game during that championship year. Barker is 6-foot-3 and gives it all on the floor which makes her a joy to watch compete. Janiah is a top-tier Division I prospect with a ton of potential.
Kailyn Gilbert, So. G, Tampa Prep – Kailyn can flat out score the rock. She managed to score over 30 points a game last year…as a FRESHMAN. She also had 6.5 steals and 6.6 boards in her first year. You’re going to hear her name a lot over the next few years, and the college offers will keep pouring in.
Honorable Mention:
Brooks DeBartolo – Jaela Davis, Amarie Godwin, Triniti Youngblood, Brionna McClinton
Plant – Kayla Sieper, SIlvia Farfante, Honor Culpepper, Morgan Sieper
Tampa Bay Tech – K’Nisha Godfrey, Amiya Evans, Jayla Murray
Seffner Christian – Cairah “CC” Mays, Kali Barber
Strawberry Crest – Megan Watson, Mya Lamar
Armwood – Taviyanna Habib, Keyara Bromley
Bloomingdale – Erin Leigh
Carrollwood Day – Maliyah Perry
Tampa Prep – Ariana Mosely
