One such matchup was last week on Dec. 10 between Flintridge Prep and Marlborough. Both teams are very solid, and the game went back and forth coming down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Marlborough ultimately ended up winning the game 67-61 behind some big shots in the clutch from UC San Diego commit Parker Montgomery. Regardless, there were players on both teams that stood out. Here’s a couple of them.
1. Parker Montgomery – Marlborough 2020
Montgomery is a very crafty scoring guard. She has great footwork on the offensive end. She’s a strong guard who has a solid post-up game for a wing. She easily overpowers smaller guards in the paint. She can also make plays off the dribble and create scoring opportunities at the rim or with pull-up jumpers. Range out to the three-point line. She’s not afraid to take big shots in the fourth quarter of a close game.
2. Sofia Gonzalez – Flintridge Prep 2021
Gonzalez is Flintridge Prep’s version of a 3&D player. She is a tough defender on the perimeter. She has good hands and quick feet, all necessary to be a good defensive player on the wing. Contests shots well on the wing. She can shoot the three ball well too. She spots up well and is good at stepping into her shot. Always ready to catch a pass. Does a lot of little things that don’t always show up on a stat sheet.
3. Catherine Or – Marlborough 2021
Or is a combo guard who can act as a scorer or a facilitator, whatever she is needed to be on the court at that moment. Scoring wise, she is able to hit pull-up threes as well as spot up on the perimeter and hit jumpers with defenders rushing at her. Good court awareness and looks for her teammates in the half-court. She’s a solid rebounder, particularly on the offensive end in keeping possessions alive.
4. Ashley Chea – Flintridge Prep 2023
Chea is one of the top freshmen in the SoCal area. It may be her first year of high school basketball, but she’s already making an immediate impact. She’s a quick guard and has good size. She’s able to play both point guard and shooting guard. She’s a crafty passer who is always looking for her teammates. She can attack the rim or shoot from the wings. Good defensively, especially in transition using her quickness to get ahead of the ball-handler.
5. Erin Yoshitake – Marlborough 2020
Yoshitake is also capable of playing both guard positions, although her size has her matched up against point guards more often. She is a great three-point shooter with a quick release. She is definitely not afraid of big moments, she hit a very clutch three against Flintridge Prep to help secure the win. She isn’t just a shooter though. She can attack off the dribble and she has a nice little floater in the lane.
