La Jolla Country Day is the No.1 overall seed in the South with a bye into the Regional Semifinals. First round matchups include No. 2 Mater Dei vs. No. 7 Long Beach Poly, No. 3 Windward vs. No. 6 Sierra Canyon, and No. 4 Etiwanda vs. No. 5 Centennial.
Here’s a look at some players to watch out for in the Southern Regional Open Division. They may not be the star of the team, but their contributions will be key for their respective team’s title hopes.
1. Jazzy Anousinh Jazzy Anousinh 5'7" | PG La Jolla Country Day HS | 2021 State CA – La Jolla Country Day – 2021
Anousinh is an improving point guard who holds an offer from Cal State Fullerton. Her presence allows Te-Hina PaoPao to play a little off ball. She is a solid ball-handler and fully capable of running the team’s offense. She looks to make the right pass and get her teammates involved. Good defensive player on the wings. She is a three-point threat and has hit some big shots for the Torreys this season.
2. Camryn Kiernan – Mater Dei 2020
The senior wing is committed to Concordia next season and is the main glue player for the Monarchs. She can do a little bit of everything on the floor; she makes winning plays that don’t necessarily show up in a box score. She is a solid wing defender with good footwork. She can knock down the open three. She isn’t afraid to dive on the floor for loose balls. A good rebounder too.
3. Michelle Duchemin – Windward 2021
This is Duchemin’s first full season with the Wildcats as she had to sit out last year after transferring from Beverly Hills. She is a tough, inside presence with a knack for rebounding. She is especially tough on the offensive glass where she’s able to secure put-backs and second shot opportunities for the team. She moves well defensively and contests shots well in the paint. Can finish strong at the rim.
4. Jessica Peterson Jessica Peterson 6'3" | C Corona Centennial | 2021 State CA – Etiwanda 2021
Peterson is a versatile big with who already has a few Division 1 offers. She transferred to Etiwanda from Corona Centennial. She can play both power forward and center. She can read the defense well and she passes well out of the post, a lost art with today’s bigs. She gets out in transition and can finish strong at the rim. She’s a decent shooter from the mid-range; can stretch the defense.
5. Sydney Summers – Corona Centennial 2023
Summers is only a freshman, but already an impactful player for the Huskies. Although they lost to Windward in their opening game of SS Open Division pool play, Summers was the catalyst that brought the Huskies back in to the game. She can shoot well from three-point range. She can also run the break and find open teammates. She’s a strong guard who can get into the lane and she can finish at the rim. Bright future ahead of her.
6. Rosemary Odebunmi Rosemary Odebunmi 6'1" | PF Sierra Canyon | 2020 State CA – Sierra Canyon 2020
Odebunmi is committed to Pepperdine, and a good interior presence for the Trailblazers. She does all the dirty work in the paint and makes plays that don’t always show up in a box score. She has the ability to be a strong, defensive anchor; she contests shots well at the rim. She’s also a good rebounder who boxes out well. She is a very mobile player who runs the floor well and can finish at the rim.
7. Ashlee Lewis Ashlee Lewis 6'2" | PF Long Beach Poly | 2020 State CA – Long Beach Poly 2020
Lewis is another strong interior player who will be going to Cal State Fullerton next season. She’s play well in half-court sets and can establish position in the post. She’s also a mobile big who gets out in transition. She has good footwork in the paint and is decisive when making a post move with a soft tough around the rim. Very active on the glass on both ends of the court.
