The five players below can be looked at as the five players who have a good shot at moving up in the rankings in the next update in July. While these won’t be the only five players who move up, I wanted to look at five players who in my mind can improve and jump the most. The list below was restricted to those players who made our initial Top 2023 rankings.

As a point guard, Schlesisman is among one of the best in the freshman class. In order for her to move up in the rankings going forward, she will need to play within herself a little bit more. She can make plays all over the court but at times I think that she can hold onto the ball just a little longer or step in to take a jumper. It is all about growing her game right now as she’s a future college player. With a jump this summer I can see her moving into the Top 50.

When doing the rankings I kept wanting to move Fitzgerald up but there are just so many talented wings in this class that I just couldn’t. Her ranking of #48 might seem low, but this 2023 class is very good. She knows how to play the game really well and going forward I want to see her be able to score the ball more at will on all three levels as well as continue being a good defender. She’s definitely right on that bubble where you can make an argument for her at #25 or #48 right now.
#43
Kaitlyn Mumm

– 6’ SG – Des Moines Christian
Mumm is a very interesting player in the 2023 class as a very athletic guard. It is tough to find players who are 6’ or above that have the athleticism to guard on the perimeter. Mumm has a ton of potential with her game right now and will continue to rise up the charts as she develops her offensive skillset. She’s an interesting case as she could likely rise as high as #15 or better but if the offense doesn’t come around she could potentially drop as well.
#33
Maggie Criswell

– 5’5 PG – Waukon
Criswell is another player that you might watch and wonder how she is #33 on the list. For her to rise she will need to gain consistency, which is the name of the game for freshmen at this stage in their career. She didn’t play a huge role on her high school team this past year but has the ability to fill up the stat sheet every single night. Criswell has a load of potential and over the next year or so if she starts to harness it she can move into the teens as a dynamic scoring guard.
#25
Jena Young

Young

Winterset | 2023

– 5’6 PG – Winterset – All Iowa Attack
Young is among the most skilled players in the 2023 class but she is also one of the rawest players as she is a high-level softball player as well. She has a scorers mentality but at times that hurt her as she tends to force shots up and plays the game in the air. As she continues to grow as a lead guard she will learn to play off of two feet and when to take a shot and when to pass it up. Young is definitely one of the most talented players in the class and the way she develops will determine how she moves in the rankings.
