Here is a look at the Colorado Springs Metro league and what some of the teams and players were able to do.
Who won the league in ’19-20?
Doherty and Fountain-Fort Carson split league the championship, finishing the league schedule at 10-2. Fountain-Fort Carson had the better overall record over Doherty, and the rest of their league rivals, at 20-3. Doherty finished the season at 17-9 overall. In a rivalry game between the two teams Fountain-Fort Carson and Doherty both split wins facing one another during the regular season.
In their first match between the two teams Doherty won 62-40 at home. In their second match of the regular season Fountain-Fort Carson took the win at home, defeating Doherty, 50-48, in a very close game. Giving another opportunity for the teams to battle once again in the playoffs to advance past Sweet 16, Fountain- Fort Carson defeated Doherty, 51-39.
Five players that shined
Alyssa Rodriguez (Palmer)
Rodriguez tied for first in the league in scoring at 13.5 points per game. Despite being 5-foot-3, she can will the ball into the basket while showcasing the ability to stretch the floor. From behind the arc, Rodriguez went 64 for 164 (39 percent), and she went 96 for 273 from the field overall. Rodriguez is young and will do what it takes to help her team win, scoring nearly 300 points this winter. She is only a freshman that can be a special player as she continues to develop and improve. She posted two 20-point games and came up just shy of that mark in nine others.
Torie Bass Torie Bass 5'4" | PG Fountain-Fort Carson | 2021 State CO (Fountain-Fort Carson)
Bass is a willing defender, keeping her opponents in front and forcing turnovers. The player of the year in her conference, she tied for first in the league in scoring at 13.5 points per game. Bass shows the ability to create plays for her teammates, and has a high basketball IQ. Playing on a team with a record of 20-3, she led her team to the Great 8. Bass averaged 3.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.7 steals per game. Bass has great feel for the game and has great change of pace ability. Standing at 5-foot-4, she brings tons of energy whenever she is on the floor.
Taryn Lindsey (Doherty)
Lindsey is a player that can create her own shot off the dribble. She shows the ability to push pace and look for teammates in transitions. Standing at 5-foot-5, Lindsey can finish around the rim with a variety of finishes against taller opponents. She averaged 13.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and just under three assists per game. Lindsey scored a season high in points with 21 against Pine Creek, helping her team get a 47-32 win. She shows signs of consistenly knocking down a mid-range shot off the dribble.
Lydia Marshall Lydia Marshall 5'8" | CG Liberty | 2020 State CO (Liberty)
Marshall is a player that loves to support her teammates when they are doing well. She creates a lot of spark for her team whether she is in the game or not. Marshall averaged 12.3 points, seven rebounds, 2.5 assists and just under three steals per game. Marshall does a great job moving without the basketball to get herself open for scoring opportunities for herself or team. She is an able shooter behind the arc, shooting 51 for 158 (32 percent). Marshall scored a season high twice in the past season with 21 points. Standing at 5-foot-8 ,the senior will look to pass the torch on to her teammates next year.
Danae Christensen Danae Christensen 5'11" | PF Fountain-Fort Carson | 2020 State CO (Fountain-Fort Carson)
Christensen is a player that can score in the post through contact. Standing at 5-foot-11, she shows great physicality inside. She averaged 11.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Christensen does a great job tracking the ball and anticipating, getting her hands on passes and missed shots. She scored a season high in points with 22 against Doherty despite her team losing 40-62. She also had two season high in rebounds with 16 and coming up just short of that season high in three games. Christensen also recorded a total of 11 double-doubles during her last year at Fountain-Fort Carson.
