Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons.
Kelsey Drake Kelsey Drake 5'9" | PF Wilton | 2022 State IA – Wilton
A bright future is blooming in Wilton with sophomore Kelsey Drake Kelsey Drake 5'9" | PF Wilton | 2022 State IA on the basketball court.
Drake led the Beavers in scoring this season, averaging 18 a night with almost eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
In all, Drake recorded 417 points, 179 rebounds, 89 steals, 60 assists and even blocked four shots. She shot 51 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line.
Hallie Mohr Hallie Mohr 5'10" | C Mediapolis | 2022 State IA – Mediapolis
Mediapolis experienced quite a bit of success this past winter, winning 21 games in all.
Sophomore center Hallie Mohr Hallie Mohr 5'10" | C Mediapolis | 2022 State IA was a big reason for that, scoring 285 points with 183 rebounds, 45 steals and nine blocks.
Mohr shot over 42 percent from the field and was effective at the free throw line, knocking down 93 of 132 attempts.
Kerrigan Pope Kerrigan Pope 5'9" | C Pekin | 2022 State IA – Pekin
There were not many players in the region who were more effective than Pekin’s Kerrigan Pope Kerrigan Pope 5'9" | C Pekin | 2022 State IA .
Pope recorded 185 points, shooting almost 68 percent from the field. She also recorded 110 rebounds, 14 assists, 13 steals and 10 blocks for the Panthers.
Ella Caffrey – Wilton
Wilton featured numerous underclassmen this past year, including sophomore Ella Caffrey.
Caffrey started 21 of 23 games she played in for the Beavers, recording 177 points, 132 rebounds, a team-high 26 blocks, 22 steals and 15 assists.
Even bigger things could be coming from Caffrey with an improvement from long-range and at the free throw line.
Ava Smith – Danville
Danville pushed towards a winning record, and in 2020-21, the Bears will be relying on returnees such as Ava Smith to reach that mark.
Smith started 22 of 23 games this past year, leading the team with 179 rebounds, 83 assists and 55 steals. She also had 139 points and 14 blocks, knocking down 15 three-pointers.
