Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons.
Kaia Holtkamp – Solon
Solon flirted with a winning season in 2019-20 behind a youth-dominated lineup. That experience should help the Spartans this coming winter.
Among those back from the Class of 2022 are leading scorer Kaia Holtkamp, as she produced 246 points a year ago. Holtkamp averaged just over 11 per game, shooting 36 percent from the field with 27 made three-pointers.
Holtkamp also produced 86 rebounds, 48 assists and 26 steals.
McKenzie Rentschler McKenzie Rentschler 5'4" | PG Mount Vernon | 2022 State IA – Mount Vernon
Despite being just a sophomore last year, Mount Vernon had complete trust in McKenzie Renschler as a long-range shooter.
And she made them look smart, sinking a team-high 51 triples. Rentschler finished the year with 181 total points, shooting almost 31 percent from deep with 33 rebounds, 14 steals and 10 assists.
Sophia Hoffmann Sophia Hoffmann 5'6" | PG Dike-New Hartford | 2022 State IA – Dike-New Hartford
Those set to return for Dike-New Hartford experienced quite the ride last year, as the Wolverines reached the state semifinals and finished with 23 wins in all.
Sophia Hoffmann Sophia Hoffmann 5'6" | PG Dike-New Hartford | 2022 State IA made eight starts and played in 22 games for Dike-New Hartford as a sophomore, scoring 125 points with 52 rebounds, 50 assists and 50 steals.
She shot almost 45 percent from the field and will be a key member back for the Wolverines in 2020-21.
Makinley Levin Makinley Levin 5'9" | SF Solon | 2022 State IA – Solon
One of two players for Solon to surpass 200 total points last year was Class of 2022’s Makinley Levin Makinley Levin 5'9" | SF Solon | 2022 State IA .
Levin finished with 205 points in all, making 29 three-pointers. She was also effective getting to – and converting – at the free throw line, making 48 of her 70 attempts.
To go along with her scoring, Levin also had 72 rebounds, 26 steals, 23 assists and 15 blocks.
Elly Holubar – Solon
The leading rebounder for a young Solon squad was Elly Holubar, as she averaged just under nine boards per game, including almost five on the offensive glass.
Holubar finished with 195 rebounds to go along with 151 points and 29 steals. She shot almost 43 percent from the field and buried 10 three-pointers.
