Abby Wrede commits to Hawai’i Pacific University
One of Colorado’s best shooters in the Class of 2021 is now officially off the board.
On Wednesday, Cherry Creek’s sharpshooting guard Abby Wrede Abby Wrede 5'8" | SG Cherry Creek | 2021 State CO announced via Twitter that she will continue her basketball career at Hawai’i Pacific University. Like smart recruits do, Wrede said she considered a number of factors when making her decision.
Wrede certainly didn’t shortchange herself, picking a beautiful place to play basketball for one of the nation’s top Division-II programs.
“Obviously, a lot of factors go into it,” Wrede said. “It’s not just basketball, it’s not just school, it’s all of it. I had such a great connection with coach Reid (Takatsuka). I watched them play a bunch of times and I really liked them because they mirrored everything I love about my high school team. It really just felt like the perfect place for me to be.”
As of March 9, Hawai’i Pacific ranked No. 3 nationally in the WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.
“I can’t wait to be a part of a program like that,” Wrede said. “I did a bunch of virtual tours so I felt like I was familiar with the campus so I felt good about committing without being able to visit. I’m happy to go into my high school season without having to worry about recruiting and able to just play.”
In Wrede, the Sharks are adding a clutch 3-point shooter and solid all-around perimeter player who averaged 10.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 42 percent (32 for 76) from 3-point range as a junior for defending 5A state champion Cherry Creek in 2019-20. Wrede is also wrapping up an excellent summer with Colorado Basketball Club during which she has displayed her many improvements at the defensive end of the floor.
Wrede also had offers from the University of Texas at Tyler and Metropolitan State University at home in Denver. While both were very appealing, she said, Wrede felt like HPU was the best fit for her.
