Teams from several different states were in attendance, and as expected, the Lone Star State was well-represented. Here are few guards who caught my eye:
Zeryhia Lee-Aokuso | 2023 | 5’10’’ Shooting Guard | Pro Skills 16U Black | Amarillo HS – Aokuso displayed spectacular playmaking ability last weekend. She makes even the most difficult passes look easy. The Amarillo guard is very quick and decisive when it comes to identifying open teammates and getting them the ball in scoring position. She is a solid scorer down low as well. Her feel for the game is excellent.
Cammie McKinney Cammie McKinney 5'6" | PG Frisco Memorial | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 5’7’’ Point Guard | Texas Elite 17U 3SSB | Hebron HS – McKinney is another terrific pass-first guard. She is great as the ball handler in pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop scenarios, seemingly always making the correct decision. She can get her own too. The 2022 floor general is a twitchy athlete who can beat just about anyone to the rim off the dribble. She is a master manipulator with next level handles.
KK Jones | 2023 | 5’7’’ Combo Guard | Texas Lonestar Black 16U 3SSB | Denton Guyer HS – I’ve written about Jones’s defensive skills several times and nothing has changed there. She is still tremendous at that end. However, she is more than a defensive specialist, she is a really talented all-around player. She is deceptively good at coming away with offensive boards. She is also a solid shooter and a crafty finisher when she gets to the basket, both in transition and in the half court.
Gia Adams Gia Adams 5'8" | SG Jersey Village | 2021 State TX | 2021 | 5’8’’ Shooting Guard | Texas Flight Elite 17U GUAA | Jersey Village HS – Adams is a knock down shooter from deep. She really had it going from three-point land during this tournament. She proved that she is a versatile shot maker too, hitting outside jumpers off the dribble, spotting up off the catch, and coming off of screens. Her quickness benefits her off the ball, but it also allows her to get inside the arc to drill pull ups from mid-range or take it all the way to the basket. She is liable to score from anywhere on the floor.
Emma Robles | 2021 | 5’9’’ Combo Guard | Houston Skyrise Stars | Alvin HS – Robles is a long and athletic lead guard. She has a very smooth game. She likes to stop and pop from mid-range but can also get into the teeth of the defense where she can use her length to score. The senior guard is a generous distributor who keeps her bigs and wings involved on offense. Her length shows up on defense as well. She can be very disruptive on the perimeter.
