Between powerhouse programs such as Franklin and Rutgers Prep to quality programs like Gill St. Bernard’s, Ridge, Watchung Hills and Somerville, Somerset County is always competitive and extremely exciting. Let’s take a look at some top players in the area.
Caileigh Walsh, Gill St. Bernard’s, Sr.: Walsh in an absolute must-see player on the basketball court. She can do it all — score, rebound, block shots, get her teammates involved and play defense. Walsh had an 11-block performance last season. The Northwestern commit stands at 6-foot-4, and she is a nightmare for defenses, especially down in the paint. Walsh averaged a double-double last season. She’ll be a top player in the county and state this year, too. Walsh will look to keep putting up huge numbers before starting her collegiate career at Northwestern in the Big 10 Conference.
Christina Dalce Christina Dalce 6'2" | SF Rutgers Prep | 2021 State NJ , Rutgers Prep, Sr. Dalce, a Villanova commit, has a knack for scoring and rebounding. She had 15 double-double performances as a junior for the always-tough Argonauts. Dalce can make plays on both ends, and she’ll be a force for Rutgers Prep as it looks to dominate in the county and repeat as Somerset County Tournament champions.
Bella Murray, Watchung Hills, Jr.: Watchung Hills had an experienced group this past season. While the Warriors will lose a number of key seniors, Murray should slide into a lead role on the team. She is capable of filling a box score. While her main attributes are scoring and rebounding, Murray can also get steals and dish it out to teammates.
Delaney Donohoe, Ridge, Sr.: Donohoe played in all 30 games for the Red Devils this past season. She can score and rebound at a high level, as she finished with six double-doubles in 2019-20. Donohoe will be a go-to player for Ridge after the Red Devils lost some key seniors to graduation.
Gissell Gamble Gissell Gamble 5'5" | PG Franklin | 2023 NJ , Franklin, So.: Along with senior Kyierah Dempsey-Toney, Gamble will lead a Franklin team that is a contender year in and year out. A usual top public school in girls basketball, Gamble came on as a freshman and was a spark. She knows how to score the ball and she will become a leader for Franklin despite her youth.
Andrea Katramados, Montgomery, Sr.: Katramados averaged 11 points per game as a junior. With the loss of some top scorers, Katramados looks to have Montgomery back in the sectional title picture after capturing its first since 1998 last year.
