With that in mind, here are some potential breakout candidates for the 2020-21 season:
Rachel Dahlen Rachel Dahlen 6'2" | C Devils Lake | 2022 State ND , Devils Lake
Dahlen saw rotation minutes for a loaded Devils Lake squad last year, and was effective in limited minutes. She’ll likely step into a starting job and at 6-foot-1, she’s got the length and athleticism to be a legitimate difference-maker inside for the Firebirds. She’s strong inside and has good touch in the post. Don’t be surprised if she supplies double-double type production.
Marissa Burian Marissa Burian 5'8" | SG Fargo Davies | 2022 State ND , Fargo Davies
Fargo Davies has as much talent as any team in the state going into next season and with three potential double-double players, the Eagles are going to be a bear in the paint. With teams likely loading up to slow down the interior attack, a player like Burian is going to be in great position to shine. She was a solid rotation piece a year ago, providing perimeter shooting and defense.
Miriley Simon, West Fargo
Simon was good as a freshman, so her being good as a sophomore won’t be classified as a breakout. But she’s got the ability to be one of the best players in the league. She’s long, athletic, skilled and smart. She’s good enough to be a First-Team All-EDC player now and if West Fargo is going to contend in the league, she’ll be a big reason why.
Jade Azure Jade Azure 5'11" | C Grand Forks Red River | 2021 State ND , Grand Forks Red River
Azure was a solid player last year for the Roughriders, but with Shelby Frank Shelby Frank 5'8" | CG Red River | 2020 State ND graduating, she’s going to be even more important to the team’s cause. She’s a terrific interior defender, anchoring what should be one of the best defensive teams in the state, and her ability to finish in traffic makes her an incredibly important cog.
Emily Srejma Emily Srejma 6'4" | PF Fargo Shanley | 2022 State ND , Fargo Shanley
Fargo Shanley is losing an awful lot from a year ago. If the Deacons are going to continue to be successful, they’ll need to rely heavily on their interior players such as Moriku Hakim Moriku Hakim 6'2" | C Fargo Shanley | 2021 State ND and Srejma. Srejma saw fringe minutes last year as a sophomore, and has the talent to provide excellent production.
