The group of 2-guards in the 2021 class could take on superhero names at the top, like “Big Shot” Jayla Smith Jayla Smith 5'11" | SG Lawrence North | 2021 State #73 Nation IN , “The Finisher” Katie Burton Katie Burton 5'9" | SG Fishers | 2021 State IN , or “The Silent Assassin” Madelyn Bischoff Madelyn Bischoff 5'10" | SG Roncalli | 2021 State IN . But when it comes to this group as a whole, there is a wealth of high-level small college talent who could help take schools to the top of their conferences. Below is a look at the 54 2-guards who currently reside in our Class of 2021 Top-225 rankings, along with a quick look at the top five uncommitted prospects at this position. We will be following this article with one on each of the remaining position groups in the Class of 2021 throughout the rest of the week.

Maddie has been one of my favorites to watch the last three or four Summers, so next grassroots season will be odd without her playing. She is long, fluidly athletic, and she has a real feistiness to her. She can be a lights-out shooter at times, she has deep range on her jumper, and she does a really nice job of getting her feet set and squaring her shoulders on the catch. She has a nice feel for the game, and she can handle the ball and occasionally run offense, plus she’s an effective defender both on and off the ball because of her length. Over the years, though, I really like how she has transformed from more of a shooter to being a complete scorer. Now that she’s stronger, she’s able to absorb contact better when attacking the rim, and she’s finishing more consistently at the basket.

Moira plays with one of the best motors in the state, regardless of class. She is a quietly tough, somewhat physical, but incredibly active guard who is on attack at both ends of the floor. She has great speed, some quickness, and she will do whatever it takes to help her teams win games. Last Winter she was outstanding and ended up seeing her share of chaser defenses because of her ability to score the ball at a high level. She is probably more of a slashing scorer first, but she has become consistent from the perimeter as well. I also like her focus and intensity at the defensive end of the floor. She can defend all ’2s’ and even some ’1s’ at times, plus she rebounds her position well. I also think Moira anticipates well when she’s playing off the ball in help-side defense.

Trinity is another high-motor kid who was tough as a Freshman, but she has also developed her game over the years. She is a strong, active, North/South athlete who can get downhill quickly. She is physical attacking the basket, she can absorb contact well, and she often finishes at the rim or draws free throw attempts. She has stretched her range over the years and is now a very consistent 3-point shooter. She has also improved her handle, and while she probably needs to get a little more dynamic laterally off the bounce, you aren’t taking the ball from her. Additionally, Trinity is a really nice defender, both on and off the ball. It should be fun to watch Penn’s incredibly deep backcourt, now that she gets fellow Seniors

As physically talented as just about any guard on this list, Pa’Shence has been exactly that…patient…with her recruiting so far. She is a long, wiry strong, very fast and explosive North/South athlete. When she was younger, she leaned heavily on her ability to make plays at the defensive end of the floor and looked to score it mostly in transition. But as her game has matured, she has been an effective attacking scorer, and she finishes it well and athletically around the basket, plus she has added a mid-range game and is starting to shoot more consistently from around the perimeter. Pa’Shence is still a high-level defender, and I’ve always been a big proponent of someone being able to limit the other team’s best player. Hopefully the “right” college will come along and appreciate those same qualities in her game.

I first saw Zayda play in the Spring of 2018, but last Fall I was really impressed with how much more poised, patient, and efficient she was offensively. She has an athletic frame and moves well in all directions. She is a playmaker, without question, but she has gone from being just an attacking scorer to someone who can score the ball from the wing or the point guard position. She creates space well, knocks down shots at all levels, plus she has started to find open teammates much better in the last 12 to 18 months. The unfortunate thing for her, though, is that while she was really starting to come into her own as a complete player, she was injured early in the Spring and was not able to play over the Summer. Hopefully she’s back at full-health soon, making plays on the hardwood again this Winter.
