Anticipation has been building in New Jersey for this girls basketball campaign, with many teams expected to be vying for the top talent in the state.
Prep Girls Hoops continues to take a look at how things will shape up in South Jersey, looking at the Cape-Atlantic League and the final part of a multi-part series, focusing on juniors to watch in the United Division.
Kimmy Casiello, SG/PG Wildwood Catholic: Casiello is a budding star for Wildwood Catholic. Her off-ball movement on offense really stood out on tape. She gets open a lot on the perimeter, leading to a lot of clean looks from three. With a quick release, she’s scoring in bunches. On defense, her off-ball skills come to shine, especially on the break. Casiello isn’t afraid to give up her body for possession and will make herself felt, causing a good number of turnovers. She was Wildwood Catholic’s third-leading scorer and three-point shooter, and with Gabby Turco Gabby Turco 5'10" | SG Wildwood Catholic | 2020 State NJ graduating, she will be seeing plenty more three-point shots coming her way this season.
Roan Jaquelin, SG/PG Wildwood Catholic: Jaquelin is playing in somewhat of a backup role to Casiello, but don’t underestimate her coming off the bench. She should be seeing an increase in playing time, especially in preparation for next season, where Wildwood Catholic will see four seniors graduate. Her best game last season saw her drain three three-pointers against Pleasantville, and her shot is pure. A quicker release on her shots will propel her into one of Wildwood Catholic’s main scoring options, so stay tuned.
Jennifer Drake, SG Middle Township: Drake is tall for a shooting guard, which is a great advantage to her when she’s out on the wings shooting. She’s a confident shooter and she will grow more into the role this season, but arguably her best attribute is her willingness to defend at the point, and defend well at that. She tracks players well both on the perimeter and when they get into the lane. Drake is not only able to block with ease from her long arms, but also pick off a dribble.
Brianna Robinson, PG Middle Township: Robinson just has that personality about her which rivals that of a college player. She looks like she can ball and on the court, she walks the walk. She plays a tough style of defense, one that’s overwhelming for the opposition and puts Middle Township frequently on the break. As a coach, you want her guarding the point, you want her causing havoc the way she does, and on offense, you want the ball in her hands because her shot is smooth and she can score any way you need her to.
Olivia Fiocchi, SF Our Lady of Mercy: Fiocchi was the fourth-leading scorer for Our Lady of Mercy and the third-leading rebounder and three-point shooter last season. With Ava Casale, the team’s leading three-point shooter, graduated, Fiocchi is going to be a go-to scorer for this team, and for good reason. She’s a great off-ball player, someone who can score at will, and she plays more down low, a formidable presence on defense. She will be the leading presence down low this season, so watch out for what she can do.
Keep on the lookout for more player previews and profiles as anticipation for the season continues to build.
