What if college coaches used the Holidays to write their wish list for the type of player or prospect that they wanted to receive for their program? Let’s look at what they might ask for and a player from the class of 2022 that would make their wishes come true.
SHOT BLOCKER
Molly Long Molly Long C Grand Haven | 2022 State MI (C, Grand Haven) could definitely be that rim protector that college coaches covet. She’s a defensive specialist with great length. Long anticipates the shot, walls up, and sends it back on a regular basis.
DOMINANT POST PLAYER
I can’t even count the number of calls I’ve taken asking about a dominant post player. Coaches at levels need and want them. Nobody is more dominant in the paint than Alecsis Smith Alecsis Smith 6'2" | C Bay City Central | 2022 State MI (C, Bay City Central). Last high school season, she was throwing down triple-doubles like they were dice.
POST THAT CAN STRETCH THE FLOOR
Even better, I can tell you about a position-less player that can play in the post or the perimeter. Whatever matchup, whatever you need. That accurately desribes Madisen Wardell Madisen Wardell 6'0" | PF Detroit Edison | 2022 State MI (PF, Detroit Edison). She’ll have opposing coaches pulling their hair out.
SHOOTER
The ball has to go in to get a win, right? You have to have shooters. Jaci Tubergen Jaci Tubergen SG Hudsonville | 2022 State MI (SG, Hudsonville) is a great option here. She has range beyond the arc and can still bury a triple even with a hand in her face. She’s a focused shooter that can launch it over top.
DYNAMIC GUARD
Jordan Wright Jordan Wright 5'6" | PG Ann Arbor Huron | 2022 MI (PG, Ann Arbor Huron) has proven that is a playmaker to the extreme. She had her way with even top notch defenders at the Prep Girls Hoops Top 250. Wright made plays off the dribble, scored in a variety of ways, and fed teammates when they got hot.
TRADITIONAL POINT
Coaches at the next level still love those old fashioned floor generals. Alyssa Matuza Alyssa Matuza PG Troy | 2022 State MI (PG, Troy) fits nicely in this description. She initiates the offense with a pass and doesn’t let the ball stick in her hands. Matuza will find open teammates within the offense.
TRANSITION FINISHER
Coaches at the next level want a player that’s going to finish the job on the break. Dharyauna Pierce Dharyauna Pierce SG Jackson | 2022 State MI (SG, Jackson) is terrific in transition. She turns up the court quickly, fills the wing, and looks for the feed. Pierce is an athletic finisher with good body control.
