Prior to a huge third quarter that saw Tahlequah tie the game just before the buzzer, Guthrie looked like they may run away with it. Eventually the high tempo offense and suffocating defense of Tahlequah took it’s toll as they outscored Guthrie 27-17 in the second half.
Star of the Game
Anjewl Murillo | 5-7 CG | Guthrie | 2023 | @amurillo2023
Somehow Murillo didn’t make it onto the 2023 rankings, but she will for sure be there in the next iteration. Murillo is a pure scorer with tremendous ability. She can drain it from all three levels. Anjewl is a high motor player that runs her defenders to death. She defends very well, fights for lose balls and does everything that one could ask of a young guard. Guthrie is a very well coached team and Murillo is attentive to her coach’s voice and runs plays with precision. Her passes are crisp and her vision is impeccable. She may have been overlooked before, but not anymore. Murillo is an absolute star – proved by her 18 points against a very good Tahlequah defense – and college coaches need to take note.
Other Stars
Tatum Havens Tatum Havens 5'9" | CG Tahlequah | 2022 State OK | 5-9 G | Tahlequah | 2022 | @tatumhavens
When Havens gets hot, she gets HOT. Her 11 points in the third quarter was the catalyst for her team’s comeback. She is a great shooter and clearly has a flair for the dramatic. She does everything well including defend, rebound and get to the foul line on offense. On a team loaded with scoring power, Havens was the best on this day. Her 16 points led her team and were second only to Murillo. Havens has offers from Oklahoma Baptist and East Central with presumable more to come.
McKenna Gatson | 5-7 G | Guthrie | 2022 | @GatsonMcKenna
Gatson is yet another absolute beast of a scorer for this very young Guthrie team. She started off the game with a three pointer, displaying a beautiful jump shot with a nice high release. She wavered slightly in the fourth when Tahlequah really stepped up the defense and her team began to feed the ball almost strictly to Murillo. In the meantime, Gatson used tremendously quick hands to force several steals and was not hesitant in the least to dive for lose balls and do the scrappy things that a team needs. No word yet on any offers, but coaches, you will definitely want to take a look at Gatson’s game.
Lily Couch Lily Couch 5'8" | SG Tahlequah | 2022 State OK | 5-7 G | Tahlequah | 2023 | @lilycouch_
Couch hit a three with 4:30 left in the fourth quarter that put the Tigers ahead for good. It is really nice to see a player several times during the year to see their improvement first hand. Lily finished with nine this time around – as opposed to 11 the first time – but it was all of the little things she did that really showed her improvement. She has worked on her spacing and moving without the ball. She does a good job of getting into scoring position and is very consistent with her fluid jump shot. Couch has improved in the last few months and I have no doubt that by the end of the 2023 season, she will be more than ready to make some college coach very happy to have her on board.
