Things looked promising for Greer in the early portions of the first quarter as they scored the first nine points before South Pointe HS answered to trim its deficit to 11-8 at the end of the frame, then took a lead in the early second quarter. Eventually, clutch free throws and defense sealed the win for the Stallions.
South Pointe HS will face Travelers Rest HS in the second round now in the Class AAAA Playoffs. Travelers Rest HS defeated Westwood HS in its opening round game.
Prep Girls Hoops was on hand to take in the thrilling matchup between Greer and South Pointe. Here is a look at who stepped up for playoff basketball.
Jenna Sudduth Jenna Sudduth 5'5" | CG Greer | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Greer High School – For Sudduth, Saturday afternoon’s matchup was a playoff game that doubled as a 3-point shooting contest. Sudduth attempted a great deal of triples vs. South Pointe and a good number of those from downtown she made. She made six threes for the game and had six of the Yellow Jackets’ seven for the game. When Sudduth was not draining shots from behind the arc, she was making them at the free throw line in the fourth quarter as she was true on all four of her tries from the stripe. Sudduth would lead all scorers with 24 points.
Najah Lane Najah Lane 5'6" | PG South Pointe | 2022 State SC – 2022 – South Pointe High School (pictured on front) – Lane had herself one of those classic “not how you start, but how you finish” sort of games. At halftime, even though the Stallions had put themselves in position to win after an inauspicious beginning, Lane had yet to score and already had two personal fouls called against her. That changed in the second half with a made 3 plus clutch free throws and defensive work in the game’s closing moments. Her ball handling, ability to work her way around double teams and quickness also came in handy as well. Lane scored eight points, but given the closeness of the game and when she delivered, those were arguably the biggest of the matchup.
Amiyah Clark-Lamelle – 2024 – Greer High School – One of the best compliments a coach can give a player is if that player is consistent. Clark-Lamelle was a consistent scoring threat from start to finish for Greer as she was one of only two Yellow Jackets with at least one field goal in each quarter (Sudduth was the other). If she attracts contact, she will get to the line and make her free throws. Clark-Lamelle will also make the extra pass prior to taking a shot herself if she feels one of her teammates is in better position than her. She scored 13 points.
Makayla Adams Makayla Adams 5'6" | SG South Pointe | 2021 State SC – 2021 – South Pointe High School – 4…3…2…1 can be a good way to describe Adams’ performance on Saturday night. As in No. 4 shot (and made) her fair share of 3’s primarily in two quarters that led to one big win for the Stallions. Those two quarters were the second and fourth quarters when Adams put in eight points and the fourth when she added six for a total of 14 points for the game. Much of that occurred because of the 3-point shot, including a pair of 3’s she made early in the 4th quarter. Adams had four from behind the arc on Saturday afternoon.
Campbell Cox – 2022 – Greer High School – One may be wise to place plenty of stock in Cox before she is part of next year’s graduating class. She scored the first points for the Yellow Jackets and looked to establish herself early with shot attempts for 2- and 3-point shots. Cox will intercept passes and have them go her team’s way, can dish the ball out in the half court or transition offense and will draw contact to put her at the line. She defends well and she defends tough. Cox also came through offensively in the fourth quarter with a triple and two free throws for a nine-point outing.
Zaria Bell Zaria Bell 6'3" | C South Pointe | 2023 State SC – 2023 – South Pointe High School – If high school basketball was as deep into statistics as, say, baseball, Bell’s advanced numbers from Saturday afternoon would look impressive – particularly the field goal percentage. She came off the bench and got plenty of touches near the rim. Those, for the most part, went through the hoop. Bell also had no problem guarding ball handlers near the rim and also attracted contact to find her way to the free throw line. She provided a problem for Greer shooters that hoped to make shots near the basket, being listed at 6-foot-3. Bell concluded the game with 10 points.
