Let’s take a look at eight of the best juniors and sophomores from this past week’s action:
Hailey Mason | 2022 | 5’8’’ Shooting Guard/Small Forward | Denton Guyer HS – Mason possesses a limitless motor. Her nonstop effort sets the tone for Guyer on defense. She flies around and constantly finds ways to be disruptive at that end, doing so on numerous occasions against Allen. She was solid on offense too, aggressively attacking the basket and drawing a ton of fouls. The junior wing is super athletic, showing great speed and quickness on Tuesday. She ended the night with eight points, two assists, and two steals.
India Howard | 2022 | 6’0’’ Power Forward | Coppell HS – Howard is a freak athlete who is comfortable playing on the wing but is at her best when operating down low and utilizing her strength on the block. She handles the ball well in the open court, allowing her to turn defense into offense, evidenced by some great coast-to-coast takes following steals. The junior forward is one of the best rebounders I’ve seen this season. She is extremely physical, disciplined about boxing out, and attacks the ball at its highest point. She accounted for seven points, seven rebounds, three steals, and a block vs. Lewisville.
Deucee Reed Deucee Reed 5'5" | PG Lewisville | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 5’6’’ Point Guard | Lewisville HS – Despite sporting a pretty bulky brace on her left leg, Reed was active and productive on offense. The Lewisville guard was terrific when attacking off the dribble. She is a crafty finisher in traffic who is great about altering her speed to keep defenders off balance. Beyond that, Reed handles the ball well and is a good shooter from behind the arc, knocking down a corner three from the catch on Friday.
Maria Dicenta | 2022 | 5’9’’ Combo Guard | Allen HS – On a night when Allen had some serious struggles advancing the ball upcourt against Guyer’s defense, Dicenta was the only player able to beat the Wildcats’ full-court pass, doing so with her passing and dribbling. She is an excellent ball handler. The junior guard put the ball in the basket too, scoring with a pair of pull-up jumpers from mid-range. Her shot-making ability is a huge asset for the Eagles.
Mya Dotson | 2023 | 5’9’’ Small Forward | Lewisville HS – Dotson is a defensive specialist for the Farmers. She possesses good length on the wing and is an engaged defender from start to finish. The Sophomore forward came up with five steals vs. Coppell, all of which came in a variety of different scenarios. She has fantastic instincts when playing the passing lanes as well as quick hands and good lateral movement when defending on the ball. Coppell’s ball handlers are probably still having nightmares about being defended by the 2023 prospect.
Mariah Watson | 2023 | 5’9’’ Shooting Guard | Denton Guyer HS – Watson was the first player off the bench for the Wildcats Tuesday night. She was able to overcome some early foul trouble and ended up putting together a really nice all-around performance. The second-year guard shot 80% from the field, including a catch-and-shoot corner three. She also made some tremendous passes that led to buckets and contributed on the glass, accounting for nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Waverly Hassman | 2023 | 5’10’’ Combo Guard | Coppell HS – Relentless hustle must run in the family, because both Chloe and Waverly Hassman never give less than 100% when they are on the floor. The sophomore guard started the game and played with a ton of energy at both ends of the court. On defense, she is a solid defender on the perimeter. On offense, she is a good ball handler who thrives in the pick-and-roll. Furthermore, she has good touch on her floaters and runners when she gets into the paint.
KK Jones | 2023 | 5’8’’ Point Guard | Denton Guyer HS – If you are looking for a player who is positioned for a breakout season next year, look no further than Jones. She has been in the shadow of several Division 1 athletes in her first two seasons as a starter for Guyer. However, with Evie Goetz Evie Goetz 5'11" | SF Denton Guyer | 2021 State TX , Isabella Earle Isabella Earle 5'8" | SG Denton Guyer | 2021 State TX , and Eryka Patton Eryka Patton 5'11" | SF Lewisville | 2021 State TX scheduled to graduate after this season, Jones will finally have the opportunity to operate in a starring role for the Wildcats. She is a consistent shooter from deep, a tough finisher off the drive, and a ferocious on-ball stopper who refuses to give up an inch. She was outstanding defensively on Tuesday, finishing the evening with four steals.
