On Friday, they got it as St. John Vianney and Trenton Catholic took the floor in a battle for supremacy in girls basketball in the Garden State.
The Lady Lancers and Lady Mikes put on a show for the entire state to bask in enjoying, and the game was close throughout, as Trenton Catholic took a 46-45 lead going into the fourth quarter.
It was the first time that the Lady Lancers had trailed entering the final quarter of action this season, but the Lady Mikes found out very quickly why SJV was given its preseason No. 1 ranking.
Junior Meg Calahan was the one who gave SJV that much-needed spark, hitting a few clutch shots as part of her 15 points on the evening, and the Lady Lancers went on an 11-0 run to start the quarter.
That was plenty to stave off the Lady Mikes as St. John Vianney went on to win, 62-55. That 17-9 fourth quarter made all the difference.
Three Lady Lancers finished in double-figures, Cahalan, senior guard Katie Hill Katie Hill 6'0" | SF St. John Vianney | 2021 State NJ and junior guard Madison St. Rose Madison St. Rose 5'10" | PG St. John Vianney | 2022 State #65 Nation NJ .
Hill had 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks on the night, and St. Rose was her unstoppable self on the court, leading all scorers with 28 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
TCA had a balanced scoring attack on the evening, led by sophomores Aaylah Del Rosario and Zoe Brooks Zoe Brooks 5'8" | CG St. John Vianney | 2023 State NJ .
The two had 17 points each, with Del Rosario recording 7 rebounds, 2 assists and two blocks and Brooks recording 6 rebounds, 2 assists and one block.
The Lady Mikes rebounded in a big way after a rough first quarter, out-scoring the Lady Lancers in the second and third quarters, but that momentum went away in a flash after that 11-0 run.
St. John Vianney has officially solidified itself as the best program in New Jersey this season, now 11-0 this season after Friday night’s win, ending the regular season with perfection.
They enter the Shore Conference Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed and with how well this team has played throughout this season, don’t be surprised if they run the table and finish as the best program in the state.
