February and March are the two craziest months of the GHSA season. With the season now wrapped up, here’s a look at some of the top performances of the GHSA State Playoffs that I witnessed, sans the State Championships.
2021 5-9 G Ja’khia Parker – Upson-Lee
Ja’khia Parker was the heart and soul of Upson-Lee vs. Stephens County. It was her effort that lifted everyone else. Parker is tough as nails and rebounds as well as any guard I’ve seen. She is physical and athletic. Parker hung 17 points, 17 rebounds and 3 assists. She has an interesting game. She nailed 2 threes, but she really hunted mismatches and would go into the post and post-up smaller guards. Her aggressiveness will take her a long way.
2021 5-10 F Tyla Zellner – Upson-Lee
At first glance you might expect Tyla Zellner to be a classic banger but you would be wrong. Zellner is so skilled for her size. She has a terrific outside shot and overall scoring touch. She drilled 3 threes and finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Zellner could be a sneaky good pickup at the right school.
2021 5-3 G Savana Broska – Stephens County
Lil Red was lights out from deep and led Stephens County with a game-high 22 points. She nailed 4 threes in the first half. Any time she got her feet set, she was money from three. In the second half she even showed the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the hoop. It was a major stock up performance for the goggled shooter.
2021 5-7 G Kiarra Howard – Stephens County – Piedmont
KiKi Howard provides energy and quickness. She’s a strong defender that collects steals and deflections. She does a good job of jumping passing lanes. Her jump shot is unorthodox, but she canned 3 three-pointers. Howard netted 11 points and gathered 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals and 1 block.
2021 5-11 F Ranajah Verdell Ranajah Verdell 5'11" | PF Stephens County | 2021 State GA – Stephens County
Root is one of the best forwards left in Georgia. She is extremely long and uses her length well. Verdell can high-point rebounds and alter shots in the lane. On offense, her go-to move out of the post is to catch and the dive to her left to get to her right hand. Verdell also can finish with a hook in traffic. She posted 17 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 2 blocks in the Elite Eight.
