Below are some standouts that have had a huge impact on their team’s success throughout this tournament so far!
Quiana Birmingham |2022 PG| Addison Trail
She reminds me of a young Kristi Toliver. Her IQ is always on high alert, to the fact that when she’s calling sets, you can hear her tell her teammates where they need to be positioned. This translates to her vocal leadership as well. Whether she’s on the bench or on the court, she’s encouraging her teammates non-stop! Her defense is lockdown as well, her feet are quick, she’s disciplined and her stance is strong. Hopefully, her opponents give her the same treatment. Cause if not, she can shoot with the best of them and she will make you pay.
Sophie Sullivan Sophie Sullivan 5'7" | PG Willowbrook | 2022 State IL |2022 Combo Guard| Willowbrook
Willowbrook is home too many big names and Senior Sophie Sullivan Sophie Sullivan 5'7" | PG Willowbrook | 2022 State IL is penciling herself in that conversation. To me, her patience is one of her main strengths. Being a lefty is already an advantage for her, but the fact she uses her off hands on most of her drives and breakdowns shows the level of talent. Her ball-handling skills are high and rarely results in turnovers. On the defensive side, she will and wants to shut the best player down. Don’t count on dropping 15+ when you are her assignment.
Elle Bruschuk| 2024 SG/PF| Willowbrook
Sophomore guard Elle Bruschuk is a rebounding machine. Her defense and rebounding is all effort, and that’s something that can’t be taught. You have to want every possession, she does. Her defensive rebounding is impressive, but it’s the way she gets those second possessions on the offensive board that displays her grit. I watched her dive to the board from all over the court for an offensive rebound on multiple possessions that seemed to be over. She grabs, assesses the floor, and makes a play for herself or a teammate.
Sara Balli | 2022 Combo Guard| Lake Park
Sara’s strong ball-handling allows her to create and dissect the defense at any moment of the game. She can finish at the rim with either hand just as well. If you play up she’ll get past you, if you sag off, tell the scorekeeper to put 3 on the board. Sarah has a smooth jumper that never changes, which allows her to shoot from anywhere on the court at a high clip.
Gabi Burgess| 2023 Guard| Lake Park
When you’re tired of worrying about her teammate shooting the lights out, be aware of Gabi coming through the paint and finishing with ease. Her knack for finishing at the bucket with or without contact is just something to watch. When it’s her turn to run the offense, she’s as patient as they come. When you’re as confident as she is, then patience is second nature. Gabi’s vision and awareness of her teammates translate easily to open dimes. She passes the ball with precision and quickness.
