Kylee Callahan Kylee Callahan 5'8" | PG Salpointe Catholic | 2022 State AZ is a 5-7 senior to be point guard for Salpointe Catholic High school in Tucson. She also plays for her club team, the Tucson Rattlers 17U. Last year Salpointe finished with an overall 19-2 record and 5-1 in Conference 4A. Although Kylee had 14 points and five rebounds in the state championship game, Salpointe lost to Seton Catholic, 70-62. For the season, she averaged 12.2 points per game along with 3.4 assists and 4.7 rebounds. In 70 games over her three-year career, she averaged 5.8 points a game as a freshman, 8.9 as a sophomore, and 12.2 this past season. She is also a member of the girls’ track and field team.
Kylee was selected as second team, All-Conference 4A this past season. She also received Honorable Mention for the Sports360AZ All-Academic Girls Basketball Team by having a weighted GPA 0f 3.9. One scout referred to Kylee as “…having impressive footwork and aggressive with a good understanding of the game. She is very competitive and works well without the ball. She has now added an effective jump shot to her game out to the three-point line. Kylee is also an excellent defender and usually plays the best guard on the opposing team.”
Sunday Leopoldo Sunday Leopoldo 5'9" | PG Cholla | 2022 State AZ is a five foot seven point guard and wing for Cholla High School. She also plays for her club team, Sonoran Sting. While a freshman and sophomore, she won the Player of the Game a total of eight times as awarded by Max Preps. In her three-year varsity career – a total of 48 games – she averaged 11.5 points and 9.1 rebounds. As a freshman, she averaged 7.0 points per game, 15.8 as a sophomore, and 23.1 as a junior. Her older sister also played basketball at Cholla, graduating in 2020.
One scout called Sunday “…a very good player that has the ability to shoot the three. She is still growing and is a very versatile player. Sunday can run the floor well and is considered a good defender, rebounder, and shot-blocker”. Another scout feels Sunday is one of the most athletic players in the state for her class. “Her body type translates well to the college level. Sunday is great in transition and slashing to the basket.” She should have a breakout year as a senior in 2021-2022.
Kelsey Ericksen Kelsey Ericksen 5'5" | PG Shadow Ridge | 2022 State AZ is a five-foot-five point guard for Shadow Ridge High School. She also plays for her club team, 602 Lady Nation. Shadow Ridge went 6-13 last year and 1-3 in their conference. Kelsey, as a junior, averaged 12.3 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game. From November 2019 to February 2021 she was selected as Player of the Game a total of 14 times by Max Preps. In two seasons, a total of 44 games, she is averaging 13.5 points and 3.1 rebounds.
Kelsey has a weighted GPA of 4.33 and is a member of the Sports360AZ All-Academic Girls basketball Team (4A-6A). She was selected First Team All-District among the Dysart schools. Captain of her team, she plays for Head Coach James Nyman. “Kelsey understands the game and has a high basketball IQ,” said the coach. “She dribbles well and creates space. She is also a good defender and has stepped up as a vocal leader.”
Tessa Hastings Tessa Hastings 5'6" | PG Salpointe Catholic | 2022 State AZ is a five-foot-five point guard who plays for Salpointe Catholic High School. Her club team is TNT. After her freshman year at Tanque Verde High School, she transferred to Salpointe Catholic. As a freshman, in 29 games, Tessa averaged 7.9 points per game and 3.7 rebounds. She was selected as a member of the Southern Arizona All-Freshman team. As a sophomore for the Lancers, she averaged 6.3 points per game and 3.4 rebounds. Last season those numbers were 9.8 points and 2.7 rebounds. Tessa can also play shooting guard and point forward.
Salpointe Catholic finished 19-2 last March but lost to Seton Catholic in the Conference 4A State Championship. Tessa has a weighted GPA of 4.06. Her Head Coach, Joe Luevano had this to say about Tessa. “She is a gym rat (along with teammate Kylee Callahan Kylee Callahan 5'8" | PG Salpointe Catholic | 2022 State AZ ) and they have the same club team and are both captains. She is a confident player, a 4.0 student, and has the leadership ability to pick her teammates up and bring them along.” She should have an outstanding senior season.
Syrene Sanders Syrene Sanders 5'5" | PG Cactus Shadows | 2022 State AZ is a five-foot-five point guard for Cactus Shadows High School in Cave Creek. She also plays for her grassroots team, 602 Lady Nation. As a sophomore, the Lady Falcons went 27-5 and 12-0 in their division. Syrene averaged 6.2 points per game along with 3.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds. Cactus Shadows lost in the state tournament to Sunrise Mountain in 2020, 64-48. She plays for Head Coach Alexandra Wampfler.
For her first two years, Syrene averaged 6.4 points per game in a total of 59 games. As a sophomore, she led the team in assists (3.3) and had just 2.6 turnovers per game. One scout referred to her as “a great team leader and floor general. She turns defense to offense by harassing opponent guards. She is also a solid shooter and a pass-first point guard. Syrene is lightning quick with a good basketball IQ. She finishes with both hands, is a lockdown ball defender, and sets her teammates up for success at both ends of the court.”
