Several teams made the trip to Hartsville for Thursday’s camp – including Sumter, Goose Creek, First Baptist and Lakeside among others. This will be one of two camps the school plans to host as there will be another at Coker next week with an entirely different slate of teams.
Prep Girls Hoops also made the drive to the home of the Cobras for Thursday’s camp event. Here is a look at who turned in impressive performances from the classes of 2022 and 2023.
Kindan Dawson Kindan Dawson 5'7" | CG Hartsville | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Hartsville HS – It is a good thing to know that Hartsville has its own KD. The name is familiar to when she participated in the Pee Dee Girls All-Star Game at Wilson High School in late April. Dawson knows how to find pathways to the basket and can sink 3-point shots. She can get really creative with how she passes as well as with her ball handling. Dawson will make plays from anywhere on the floor and her court awareness and basketball IQ enable her to see plays as they occur. She is an efficient rebounder and will also come up with steals on defense.
Aletrice Benjamin Aletrice Benjamin 5'5" | SG Hartsville | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Hartsville HS – The Red Foxes have been, in large part, all about this Benjamin the last couple of seasons. She is coming off a 2020-21 season where she averaged over 13 points per game. She did not wear a number at the camp at Coker but her presence was anything but blank. Benjamin made plays near the rim and drained a number of 3-pointers. She brought her mid range jumper with her as well. She knows how to haul in rebounds, pass with precision, reject shots and get opposing teams to turn over the ball. Her pathways to the rim can involve her drawing contact and getting to the free throw line.
Ravin Griffin Ravin Griffin 5'8" | SG Goose Creek | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Goose Creek HS – She is another that we have seen a few times already on the travel circuit with Charleston Swarm the most recent of those being at the LBI Southern Memorial Showdown at Legacy Early College. As soon as it was time for her to play, she immediately began putting her stifling defense on display. Griffin has proven herself to be a potent scorer as well as one who can and will make plays on defense. And when those plays are steals, those of course have the potential to become transition baskets for Goose Creek. She knows how to help her team with the 3-point shot as well.
A’Zaria Knox A’Zaria Knox 5'7" | CG Trinity Collegiate | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Hartsville HS – As expected, Hartsville was well-represented at an event being held in its town. One of the team’s primary point guards, she manages to drive to the rim and is adept at moving the ball around with her teammates. As potent as she is with the ball, Knox will attract plenty of attention which can include double-teams – and she knows how to find her way out of those situations. She can recover in case of slight miscues caused by a defense and has no problem finding her way to the basket and drawing contact if it so occurs. Knox also causes problems on defense, as she proved this past season when she averaged nearly two steals per contest.
