The travel season has reached its halfway point. We continue to check in with teams all around the state with an outlook on their season and a breakdown of some of their top players. This week we take a look at one of the top 16U teams in the state of Florida – Team Knight 16U.
Class of 2023
Taelyn Carey Taelyn Carey 6'1" | SF Westminster Academy | 2023 State FL – 6’1 – Forward
Carey’s upside is enormous. At 6’1, she moves very well around the court. She has a gift for blocking shots, as her length and instincts work together beautifully. She has good vision and passing ability and has demonstrated the ability to shoot the three ball as well. As Taelyn gets stronger and more aggressive, she will continue to blossom. She is a stock riser!
Emily Montes Emily Montes 5'9" | CG Palmer Trinity | 2023 State FL – 5’10 – Combo Guard
Emily is the floor general for Team Knight 16U. She pushes the tempo with a fire and competitive spirit that is infectious. She is extremely versatile, a capable scorer and shooter that excels in the open court and is a natural at creating for the elite shooters on the Team Knight roster. Her length and aggression have her constantly deflecting passes and blocking shots as well. Emily plays with passion and is the definition of a “high motor” player.
Sofia Travieso Sofia Travieso 5'10" | SG Carrollton School | 2023 State FL – 5’10 – Shooting Guard
Sofia is one of the top 2023 pure shooters in Florida. She has had multiple games with 3 or more three-pointers. She has excellent footwork, a quick release, and is a quiet defensive competitor. Sofia does an excellent job of letting the game come to her but seems to always get hers throughout the course of the game. She does a great job of running the court in transition.
Taylor Williams Taylor Williams 5'6" | SG First Coast | 2021 State FL – 5’8 – Guard
Taylor is a very athletic guard that provides great energy for Team Knight. Team Knight 16U certainly enjoys pressuring their opponents, and Taylor uses her quickness and speed to play the passing lanes. Taylor also showed she can knock down open 3’s and finishes well with either hand around the basket.
Class of 2024
Janessa Kelley Janessa Kelley 5'9" | SG Blanche Ely | 2024 State FL – 5’9 – Guard
Class of 2024 Janessa Kelley Janessa Kelley 5'9" | SG Blanche Ely | 2024 State FL is playing up a year, but is the Team’s “go to” scorer. Janessa is a flat-out scorer with a beautiful stroke and ice in her veins. She has a throwback scorer’s mentality, as she does not need the ball in her hands to be effective. Her release on her jump shot is incredibly quick, and also uses a nice shot fake make defensives pay when the close out too hard. Janessa does a good job of pressuring the basketball defensively as well.
Laketrice Peterson Laketrice Peterson 6'2" | CG Blanche Ely | 2024 State FL – 5’10 – Center
Laketrice is very raw but has loads of potential. She plays with high energy, is very mobile and plays extremely aggressive and physical. She does an excellent job of competing for offensive rebounds and has a decent touch around the basket. She will continue to grow and evolve as a player with more skill instruction and time on the court.
Charisse Martin Charisse Martin 5'7" | CG Blanche Ely | 2024 State FL – 5’9’ – Guard
Charisse is a member of the state champion Miami Country Day Spartans. She is an amazing athlete that excels in the open court. Her athletic ability really stands out when you watch her play on the ball defensive. She takes pride in pressuring and disrupting the ball handler and comes up with lots of steals. Charisse can knock down shots from the perimeter, and also has a nice midrange game.
Samantha Vales Samantha Vales 5'3" | CG Sports Leadership And Management | 2024 State FL – 5’3 – Combo Guard
Samantha is quick, strong, stocky combo guard that has the ability to score in bunches. She is skillful and creative at finishing around the basket for her size, and has the ability to heat up from behind the three point line. Samantha does an excellent job of hustling back on defensive to prevent easy scoring opportunities for opposing teams. She also helped her HS team bring home a state championship, playing a big role in Miami Christian taking home the FHSAA 2A State Championship.
