This past weekend, Burbank High School played host to the Balboa Shootout which featured rosters from Cal Storm and Cal Sparks, two of the top AAU programs in the state.
I was able to catch a few games on Saturday morning and here’s a look at some of the players that stood out to me.
1. Morgan Edwards Morgan Edwards 5'7" | SG Serra HS | 2022 State CA – Cal Sparks – Serra 2022
Edwards stood out for her defensive ability. She’s a real solid defender on the wing. She has quick hands and get into the passing lanes. She applies strong pressure on the ball and is aggressive at all times. Offensively, she can handle the ball at times and make plays off the dribble. She’s a in the mold of a shooting guard. Can shoot with consistency from three and can get to the rim.
2. Eva Delgado – Cal Storm – Dos Pueblos 2023
Delgado is another player that stood out for her defensive play. She’s also a wing defender. She slides her feet well and keeps pace with the ball-handler. She’s slight and slim but she can be active on the glass. She gets in there and crashes the boards when a shot goes up. Floor spacer who likes to drift to the corners; catch and shoot. Looks to make the right play whether it’s to take a shot or make a pass.
3. Hosanna Walker – Cal Sparks – JSerra 2021
Walker is capable of playing both power forward and some center and can be a force to be reckoned with in the paint She moves well without the ball and makes good dives to the rim. Good hands and good size. She’s patient with the ball and makes decisive moves in the paint. She can take contact and finish through the defense. Active rebounder. She can handle the ball a bit on the break and she makes the right reads.
4. Tabitha Vanderhorst Tabitha Vanderhorst 5'5" | PG Mission College Prep | 2022 State CA – Cal Storm – Mission College Prep 2022
Vanderhorst was a solid point guard. She doesn’t try to do too much. She follows the game plan and can run a team’s offense. Steady leader and a solid ball-handler. She can dribble against defensive pressure. Sees the court well and looks to make the pass to the open teammate. Can shoot well from three-point range. A good defender who can create transition opportunities off of turnovers.
