Let us take a look at a few players from the class of 2022 that turned in noteworthy performances.
Ravin Griffin Ravin Griffin 5'8" | SG Goose Creek | 2022 State SC – Goose Creek HS – Goose Creek is only two years removed from having claimed its third state championship in four years. A winning program like the Gators wants winning players. Griffin has winning attributes. She plays with lots of energy and is constantly active whenever she is in a game. Given how she is a focal point of the Gators’ offensive plans, she will attract double-teams – and find her way out of them. She will help her team even more by taking and making 3-point shots and can surprise opponents by making plays from seemingly out of nowhere on defense.
Destiny Middleton Destiny Middleton 5'9" | CG Westside | 2022 State SC – Westside HS – Middle may be in her name, but she is proving to be at the top of her game. The Rams will enter the upcoming 2021-22 season as defending 4A state champions and Middleton is a primary reason why. She runs the floor very well and can get from one end of the floor to the other very fast. Middleton can make tough shots in the midrange game as well as drain her 3-point tries. She brings lots of energy to any team. In addition to a knack for grabbing rebounds, she has no problem drawing contact to get her to the free throw line in addition to making plays near the rim. Middleton will also run out to the perimeter and make key defensive plays.
Alani Martinez – Irmo HS – Here is a name Prep Girls Hoops remembers from the A1 Hoops League Session 3 camp when she was on the travel circuit with Carolina Blazers. She will make plays for her team and do so with consistency. Among those includes the ability to get to the rim and absorb contact to put her at the free throw line. Those also include getting the job done on defense – such as going for steals – in addition to prowess as a passer. Martinez is also a very confident player as she displays during moments in games where she will call for the ball.
Savannah Porterfield Savannah Porterfield 5'9" | SF Byrnes | 2022 State SC – Byrnes HS – It is somewhat fitting that Porterfield wears the No. 3 for the Rebels as she is a consistent threat to shoot from long range. And on lots of occasions, those tries from 3 go through the rim. Listed at 5-foot-9, she is taller than lots of conventional guards in the girls game. Porterfield knows how to run point and attack the basket in addition to absorbing contact which will place her at the free throw line. Whenever her team is on defense, one has to watch out for the possibility of Porterfield making a defensive play – which could include a steal that may go the other way.
Emma Messer Emma Messer 6'1" | C Byrnes | 2022 State SC – Byrnes HS – Messer can cause a mess for opponents. We go from her teammate Porterfield who wears No. 3 to Messer who wears No. 33. Of course, being 6-foot-1 is something that one cannot coach – it simply comes with its own slew of built in advantages. One of those is giving an interior dimension to the Rebels. This comes through, of course, on both ends of the floor – offense and defense. It is expected that someone who patrols the interior well would have plenty of shot blocking ability, which Messer does but she also will get steals as well.
