June is a big month for rankings throughout the Prep Girls Hoops Network, and for the Class of 2022, they start a lot of “lasts”…their last Summer of grassroots basketball, their last high school season, their last run at conference and state tournament titles, and their last opportunities to make impressions on college coaches who have been recruiting them. On the whole, the 2022 list expanded from 200 prospects to 225 prospects, and there was some movement throughout the entirety of the list. As it relates to the 2022 point guard group, there are 54 ladies who have acquired a spot within the Top-225, and five of them are new to the list on PGH Indiana. With a full Spring season “in the books” for the first time since 2019, it helped to provide more clarity as to who the better prospects are throughout the state. Below is a look at those 54 prospects, as well as some added information and analysis of the newcomers, plus a handful of additional girls who have stood out since our last rankings update in March.
Newcomers
As it relates to the Class of 2022, a 25-player expansion is part of the emphasis with regards to our Summer rankings. As we expanded from 200 to 225 prospects, five young ladies at the point guard position are new to the rankings list this time around. They are highlighted below, and if you know them, I think you’d agree they belong here.
Makenzie Carroll Makenzie Carroll 5'4" | PG North Central (Indianapolis) | 2022 State IN , North Central H.S. (Indianapolis) – Mackenzie popped up on the radar this Spring by playing in a competitive grassroots situation, and she has taken full advantage of it. She is a quick/fast water-bug who runs and jumps well. She has really good length at her height, and she can make plays at either end of the floor. Once she learns how to change speeds more consistently, she could be a handful.
Lexi Linder Lexi Linder 5'5" | CG Bishop Dwenger | 2022 State IN , Bishop Dwenger H.S. – Lexi is a versatile, skillful guard who does a little of everything well. She has some length, solid speed and quickness, and she can handle the ball and initiate the offense, or she can attack the basket as well. She’s a capable perimeter shooter when she has rhythm, so she can also play off the ball. She plays with a nice motor and a quiet toughness/feistiness to her game.
Evan Spidel, Carmel H.S. – Evan is a solid and experienced guard. She can handle the ball and run offense, she takes care of it and is efficient, and she plays with a steadying pace and won’t force the action. She can also play on the wing and knock down shots consistently, plus she has a solid basketball IQ and a good motor. The combination of her skill and understanding make her a nice small college prospect.
Emily Todor Emily Todor 5'6" | CG Indian Creek | 2022 State IN , Indian Creek H.S. – Emily is a solid athlete who moves well in most directions. She has a wiry-strong frame, she’s a tough-nosed kid, and she plays with a nice motor. She can handle the ball, run offense, plus she’s a willing passer. But she’s also a consistent perimeter shooter, and she does a nice job of attacking the basket and drawing free throw attempts. She’s well-rounded and can play either guard spot.
Cagney Utterback Cagney Utterback 5'3" | PG Frankton | 2022 State IN , Frankton H.S. – Cagney isn’t very tall, but she’s strong for her size, fairly tough and feisty, and she plays with a good motor. She has a really nice overall feel for the game, and she understands situational basketball. She takes care of the ball, but she can also break down a defense, plus she can consistently knock down perimeter jumpers if left open. She’ll also defend with good effort.
Keep an eye on…
Darryn Hood Darryn Hood 5'5" | CG Tindley | 2022 State IN , Tindley Accelerated H.S. – I was really impressed with Darryn’s play at the PGH Indiana Top-250 Showcase last Fall, but she has been even better so far this Spring. She is a really nice athlete in all directions, she has an athletic frame with some length, and she plays with a nice motor. This Spring she has gone from being more of a scorer, to being more of a creator who can also score…plus she’ll defend.
Keegan Kaiser Keegan Kaiser 5'9" | PG Floyd Central | 2022 State IN , Floyd Central H.S. – Keegan was injured at the very beginning of July in 2020, so she missed most of the Summer/Fall. But she is back, and she’s playing better than I ever recall. She looks in total control as a point guard, she has great length, speed and quickness, and she plays with a motor. I think her handle has improved a great deal, she looks stronger, plus she’s shooting it consistently.
Tynlie Neal Tynlie Neal 5'6" | CG Clinton Prairie | 2022 State IN , Clinton Prairie H.S. – When Tynlie was younger, she was more of a shooter/scorer when I saw her at grassroots and showcase events. But this Spring, she has shown a true ability to run the show. She is strong with the ball, she doesn’t force much, but when she is determined she can put her head down and attack the basket, often finishing through contact or drawing fouls. She plays with a passion for the game.
Gracie Shorter Gracie Shorter 5'5" | PG Sullivan | 2022 State IN , Sullivan H.S. – Gracie and her sister Delainey Shorter Delainey Shorter 5'7" | SG Sullivan | 2022 State IN (2022 SG) have been difficult to catch in action, because they haven’t played grassroots ball…until this year. Gracie is as tough as they come at the point guard position. She is a nice athlete in most directions, but it’s her feistiness, physicality, and nonstop motor that make her successful. She has a solid skillset, but she wins by outworking her matchups.
