With the 2021 travel season concluded and the 2021-22 school year started, the class of 2022 has been busy. Many have taken the opportunity to visit college campuses, participate in college elite camps, and played a number of games on the travel ball circuit. Here are five players in the class of 2022 that college coaches should be watching.
Taja Stephens Taja Stephens 5'8" | CG Western | 2022 State FL (Western HS / Tampa Thunder) 5’7 Guard
Stephens averaged 17.8 points and 8 rebounds per game for Western High School in Davie, FL this past high school season. The athletic scorer can play the point guard, shooting guard, and wing positions. Offensively she plays very well off the ball, catching the ball on the wing in scoring positions. She is a well rounded player who had an excellent Junior season with Western High School and followed that up with a solid 2021 travel season with Tampa Thunder.
Kayla Smith Kayla Smith 5'10" | SF Winter Haven | 2022 State FL (Winter Haven HS / Essence) 5’8 Guard
Smith is a big, 5’8, lefty guard who runs the floor hard and fills up the stat sheet in a variety of ways. She has an efficient offensive floor game from mid-range and at the rim. She had an excellent Junior season with Winter Haven High School averaging 9.9 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Lady Blue Devils. She has excellent length from the perimeter position and was very effective getting in passing lanes and pressuring the ball for Essence TipHayes Purple 17U.
Emani Theodule Emani Theodule 5'6" | CG American Heritage | 2022 State FL (American Heritage Plantation) 5’6 Guard
Theodule has been off the radar, getting injured during the 2020-21 high school season and missing the 2021 travel season as well as parts of the 2020 season. She has one of the top shooting strokes in the state to along with a strong, compact build. Her build and strength, make her an impactful player on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Her strength is a major asset as a defender, keeping opposing perimeter players trying to take her off the dribble in front of her and out of the paint.
Reilly Webb Reilly Webb 5'9" | CG Lakewood | 2022 State FL (Lakewood HS / Tampa Thunder) 5’7 Guard
Webb is a tough, gritty 5’7 guard that pushes the ball aggressively in transition to score at the rim or get her teammates an easy shot. She can handle the ball well with both the left and right hand and has a high basketball IQ and a good passing ability. I like the way she competes on every possession and never gives up on a play consistently being around the basketball if there is a loose ball, going to the boards from the guard position, and chasing down offensive players in transition preventing easy layups. I love her intensity and energy she plays with every possession!
Maya Williams Maya Williams 5'6" | CG St Thomas Aquinas | 2022 State FL (St. Thomas Aquinas / Miami Suns) 5’4 Guard
Williams was very good this summer for Miami Suns Gold, doing a good job attacking the rim off the dribble and knocking down open 3s. She is crafty around the rim, with the ability to finish at the rim in a variety of ways and looks to attack and push the ball at all times! She plays unselfish and gives ball up to open teammates, makes the extra pass and does a great job with ball pressure, on ball defense and getting in passing lanes doing a good job causing turnovers by getting after opposing guards.
