In the COVID-19 2020 world we are living in, video and highlight films have become more and more prominent and important. We will be posting evaluations from the videos weekly. This month, we take a look at some of the new highlight videos that have been sent to us or posted in August.
2022
Layla Acosta (Haines City High School) Point Guard
Intriguing small point guard with strong build. She a great passer, excellent handles, great shooter, and loves to play defense. She plays hard and fearlessly and is very active. She is at her best in a fast paced, up-tempo game. She pushes the ball aggressively in transition and likes to give up the ball to the open player for the easy shot. She has 3 point range and is a creative passer.
Jaela Davis Jaela Davis 5'7" | CG Brooks DeBartolo | 2022 State FL (Brooks DeBartolo / Team Candice Dupree) 5’8 Guard
How can you not love a player who starts their highlight video with a charge!?!?!? Davis has great size and athleticism for a perimeter player and her energy is infectious. She plays with a passion that is contagious and all her teammates feed off of! Her activity level on both sides of the ball is impressive as she is non-stop from the jump ball to the final buzzer. She has a quick, explosive first step which she uses to beat her defender and get into the paint. She does a good job when getting into the paint of kicking it out to the open player for 3 as well as keeping it herself and finishing at the rim. Definitely a player that is flying under the radar in the 2022 class!
Amber Mateo Amber Mateo 5'4" | CG Somerset Silver Palms | 2022 State FL (Somerset Academy Silver Palms / Miami Suns) 5’4 Guard
Highlights are from 2021 travel season with the Miami Suns. Mateo is a walking bucket! She is an explosive scorer who can knock down a 3 from anywhere inside half court. She gets her feet set quick, has a quick release, and when defenders take away her initial shot, she has a deadly shot fake – 1 dribble step back. Simply put, defenses must close her out several feet well beyond the 3-point line and make her put it to the floor. While her biggest strength is her deep range, she does have the ability to put the ball to the floor and shoot the mid-range pull up as well as get all the way to the rim.
Katie Tagliaferro (St. John Lutheran) 5’6 Point Guard
Tagliaferro is a 5’6 guard who was nominated as 1st Team All County in 2019 and 2020 and 1st Team All State for 2A in 2020. These are highlights from the 2020-21 season. As a point guard, she is an aggressive penetrator that likes to attack the paint and draw the defense, creating easy shots for her teammates. For her size, she is strong and does a good job finishing vs contact at the rim. She has deep range several feet beyond the 3-point line and will knock it down off the catch or the dribble. Love her toughness, aggressive play, as well as how she is active on every single possession. She gets after it defensively both on the ball and off the ball – pressuring the ball handlers and running through passing lanes. She is a very good rebounder from the guard position and surprisingly blocks a decent number of shots for a 5’5 guard. Highlight video by J Miller & Company.
2023
Haley Lang Haley Lang 6'1" | SF South Fort Myers | 2023 State FL (South Fort Myers HS / Trinity Travel Basketball) 6’1 Wing
Lang is a long, athletic, active wing. These highlights are from 2021 Best of Maryland event in July 2021. Lang has great size from the wing spot, which allows her to shoot over defenders easily without them affecting her shot as well as allows her to pass over the top of defenders. Her outside shooting is her biggest strength, but she also can put the ball to the floor going right and left and score at the rim. At 6’1, she is versatile and can play multiple positions. She is a wing player but can play the 4 in a 4 out-1 in offense as a face-up 4 and can also play the 5 in a 5-out system.
Madison Vazquez Madison Vazquez 5'5" | CG St. Cloud | 2023 State FL (Gateway HS / BlueStar Orlando) 5’5 Combo Guard
Madison Vazquez Madison Vazquez 5'5" | CG St. Cloud | 2023 State FL is a 5’5 combo guard who plays for Gateway High School and BlueStar Orlando. She helped lead Gateway HS to a 6A District Championship in the 2020-21 season. These highlights are from the 2021 travel season. Quick, aggressive penetrating guard who attacks basket going downhill. She is a selfless passer with good court vision. Vazquez is a good on ball defender who does a good job keeping penetrating guard out of the paint and she hustles and is active on every possession, chasing down loose balls, hustling to rebounds, and consistently being around the basketball. The strongest part of her game is her outside shooting where she can knock it down from deep and has a quick release with excellent form. She helps space out the offense by shooting a high percentage from 3 off the penetrate and kick to the wing and corner. Highlight video by J Miller & Company.
2024
Brianna Garcia (The Heart School / Team Impact) 5’7 Combo Guard
Highlights are from 2020-21 High School season and 2021 AAU Travel Season Highlights. She is a 5’7 combo guard that attends Liberty University Online Academy for Academics, plays with The Heart School for High School Season and AAU Team Impact for Travel Season. She was nominated to the 2020-21 All-Tournament Team for High School at the National Association of Christian Athletes National Tournament in Tennessee. She is a 5’7 combo guard who can put the ball to the floor going left and right. She has 3-point range as well as a solid mid-range jumper and can finish in the paint and at the rim in a variety of ways. She runs the floor hard in transition and is a selfless passer, giving the ball up consistently to the open player. Defensively, she is an aggressive defender who likes to pressure the ball and runs through passing lanes taking steals coast to coast for easy baskets. Highlight video by J Miller & Company.
