Continue ReadingWith the 2022 rankings update also comes a fresh top five. This is truly an interesting class in comparison to many past classes and even the 2023 and 2024 groups that have some clear front runners and multiple high major Division 1 prospects. The 2022 group has not had one single player clearly establish themselves above the rest from Summer circuit performances when competition is the highest. Even when you look at top players in the 10-15 range, some could be replaceable with those in the top five. In a typical year, it would not be uncommon for at least 3-4 girls in the top five to be committed by this point, but just two have given verbals to date. Rankings are always far from perfect, but below are the updated top five players for the 2022 class.
1: 6’2 SF Drea Brumfield Drea Brumfield 6'2" | SF WF West | 2022 State #72 Nation WA (WF West HS)
- A long and wiry wing prospect. Brumfield has consistently performed at a high level for WF West High School where her length and versatility at 6’2 is a problem for other teams at the 2A level. Committed to Pepperdine.
2: 5’11 SF Zahirah Walton Zahirah Walton 5'11" | SG Kentlake | 2022 State WA (Eastside Catholic HS)
- Walton is a steady performer that has a knack for putting the ball in the hoop. She has some creativity around the basket finishing reverse layups and finessing some shots with athleticism. She is uncommitted according to the PGH WA database.
3: 5’8 PG Veronica Sheffey Veronica Sheffey 5'8" | PG Woodinville | 2022 State WA (Woodinville HS)
- Lefty point guard that is strong with the ball in her hands. She is capable of making plays for herself or others, not just a primary scorer. Sheffey is fundamentally sound and plays great on-ball defense. Also uncommitted to date.
4: 5’11 SG Kyra Gardner Kyra Gardner 5'11" | SG Raymond | 2022 State WA (Raymond HS)
- A steady stock riser that really splashed onto the scene a year ago. Gardner has solid size and next level athleticism at 5’11. She can hit the midrage pull-up jumper or get to the basket and score. She is absolutely dominant playing against inferior competition with Raymond High School. Committed to Washington State University.
5: 6’1 SF Avery Watkins Avery Watkins 6'1" | SF Kennedy Catholic | 2022 State WA (Kennedy Catholic HS)
- Watkins is another player that shines in the high school setting. At Kennedy Catholic, she is a 20-10 threat on any given night and she is capable of putting up even bigger numbers than that. She has ideal size and athleticism for the Division 1 level. Reportedly uncommitted to date.
