In this article, we’ll be going over to the 2023 list and telling you about the No. 16-18 prospects PGH NJ has ranked going into the incoming season.
No. 16: Emma Starr Emma Starr 5'9" | SG Northern Highlands | 2023 State NJ – 5-9 SG, Northern Highlands
Starr and Northern Highlands had an abbreviated 2021 season in the spring, only able to play seven games. Starr played in six of those games, but was absolutely electric on the court, averaging 16.7 PPG, including two 20+ point performances.
She showed that same success in her freshman year, knocking down nearly two three-pointers a game. As a sophomore, she upped her game, knocking down 3 three-pointers a game, showing that she’s one of the best perimeter shooters in the state.
If we’re going by trends, expect her to hit four threes a game next season, but what we will expect from her is someone who is going to be an offensive juggernaut.
No. 17: Kassidy Thompson Kassidy Thompson 5'9" | SG Camden Catholic | 2023 State NJ – 5-9 SG, Camden Catholic
We discussed the impact Thompson in our team preview of Camden Catholic after being an immediate spark plug after transferring from Clearview going into her sophomore year.
It ended up being a great choice for her career as she’s really shined with the Irish, averaging 18.6 PPG in nine games, including four 20+ point performances.
Thompson has the ability to be that much better of a guard going into this season with the greatness shown as a sophomore. Having a full season to look forward to is something that’s going to motivate her even further, and the potential to be a double-double machine is also extremely enticing.
No. 18: Karma Payne Karma Payne PF Glassboro | 2023 State NJ – 5-7 PG, Glassboro
Do not be fooled by Payne’s height as she’s one of the best rebounders in South Jersey, having nearly averaged double-digits on the glass as a sophomore.
Payne is someone who has shown she is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional player with playmaking abilities and a high basketball IQ. It also helps to be a fantastic scorer as she was in the spring.
Her signature game of the season was a 27-point, 14-rebound performance against Penns Grove, and she has that potential and then some on this team, so look out for her and Alexis Davis Alexis Davis 6'0" | SF Woodbury | 2023 State NJ to drive Glassboro’s offense.
We’ll be continuing to talk about the best of the best in the state as we go through our rankings, so keep an eye out for more with Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey.
