Continue ReadingI have to give a special S/O to Breniya Arnold-5’9 F (Duncanville) who had an amazing club season and kept the momentum going at Alamo City Hoops I-35 HS Showdown yet she wasn’t 100% this time around which is scary because Duncanville is going to make a run and let me be perfectly clear, the best 6A teams are in the same district at the moment, them and defending state champions Desoto are in the same district but here are other 2023 standouts
Tristen Taylor Tristen Taylor 5'4" | PG Duncanville | 2023 State TX -5’6 PG (Duncanville)
Taylor has just been unstoppable in the fall leagues I’ve seen her, yeah I said she was D1 player a long time ago yet she’s doing some MID to BCS stuff and showing she can run a college team. The ballhandling and court-vision combined with poise under pressure is enough but she’s stretching the defense with the long ball
Victoria Flores-5’7 SG (Duncanville)
Flores was omitted for Texas Top 100, yeah, yeah, yeah, but she’s going to make a major jump when she enters because she is one of if not the best scoring guard in Texas. She creates her shot under pressure, the mid to long-range, off the dribble finishes after contact, well acrobatically after contact and she can also play the passing lane
Jadyn Atchinson-6’1 CG (Cedar Hill)
Atchinson is “long and athletic” and let me say this, her first step is devastating and so are her finishes because she’s also strong attacks the rim powerfully while finishing strong, with either hand, after contact but she also has a nice pull-up jumper, she rebounds on both ends of the court, scored off putbacks and she does a good job defensively
Jazmine Carraway-5’9 SG (Cedar Hill)
Carraway grabbed with her “playing the passing lane” because that is a lost art and since she could handle afterward, she showed the pull-up or handling it all the way to the basket to score yet she too is long and athletic and didi a good job rebounding which she showed her coast to coast for two several times
Allysia McDaniel-6’2 PF (John Paul II)
McDaniel’s upside is scary, look she’s 74 inches with a probably 6’4 wingspan and she can handle the ball in the open court, while being pressured but she also runs the floor, on both ends and watching her not only rebound and defend, but make the offensive player aware she’s there because her timing allows her to block, alter and (or) deflect shots
Jerzie Bryant-5’6 CG (Midlothian Heritage)
Bryant plays the passing lane, yes there were several at this event yet her smoothness has always been a joy for me to observe as she can run the 1 or show she shoots well enough to play the 2 but her seeing the floor and hitting teammates on the money was nice, so was her midrange jumper not to leave out taking the defender off the dribble
Salese Blow Salese Blow 5'10" | SF Vines | 2023 State TX -6’0 PF (Plano)
Blow blew me away over the club season so much that she was added to PGH Top 100 Texas. She stands at “the magic number” that’s 6 feet of you haven’t been paying attention, and she also performs some magic on the court like attacking and finishing with body control or making shots disappear by blocking them yet her desire to battle and finish always stands out
Michaela Ballard-6’3 C (Red Oak)
Ballard was unbeknownst to me, if I saw her, I didn’t have a roster and kept it moving yet I definitely saw her use her “college-ready body” on both ends of the court. She’s strong, coordinated, rebounds and finishes, and is agile enough to defend both inside and outside the paint but I’m betting on her upside, she’s nowhere near what she will be
Jorynn Ross Jorynn Ross 6'2" | PF John Cooper | 2023 State TX -6’3 C (Summer Creek)
Ross changed schools this year yet her potential to dominate is becoming clearer every time I see her. She’s strong and she battles and watching her go after everything off the rim was a very good sign not to leave out her finishes with either hand but she’s also added some other things, like attacking from the wing which will create some problems
Honorable Mention
Joy Madison-Key (South Grand Prairie)
Destiny Jones Destiny Jones 5'7" | CG John Paul II | 2023 State TX -5’8 CG (John Paul II)
Camden Harston-5’8 CG (Horn)
Micah Vaughn-6’0 PF (Cedar Hill)
Carlea Owens-6’0 F (Cibolo Steele)
Abrianna Dandy-5’5 CG (Cibole Steele)
Nia Santiago-5’10 SF (Dallas Thunder)
