This season has been anticipated for more than a year as while the spring 2021 season happened, it was a shortened schedule of a maximum of 15 games. This is the first full high school season in nearly two years, and people around the state are anticipating a big year.
We have released our PGH NJ class rankings and watch lists for the upcoming season and in this article, we take a look at the No. 34-36 top junior prospects in the 2023 class.
No. 34: Macie Nugent Macie Nugent SG Gloucester Catholic | 2023 State NJ – SG, Gloucester Catholic
Nugent had an incredibly impressive sophomore season for Gloucester Catholic, finishing second in points and rebounds, while leading the Rams in three-point shooting and steals.
In the spring, she averaged 13.1 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 1.1 SPG and 1.5 made three-pointers a game. She has a well-rounded game overall, someone who really pushes the tempo on offense and attacks the basket with fervor.
What differs her coming into the winter is her ability to score from just about anywhere on the floor, especially the perimeter. It makes her an added threat which causes teams to put more attention on her, freeing up teammates for open looks.
No. 35: Ally Sweeney Ally Sweeney 5'8" | SG Sparta | 2023 State NJ – 5-8 SG, Sparta
Sparta was without a doubt the best team in the NJAC and one of the best in the northern half of the state this spring, much of that due to the success of Sweeney.
Sweeney and Brynn McCurry Brynn McCurry 6'1" | PF Sparta | 2023 State NJ made for an unstoppable duo, but focusing on Sweeney, she really blossomed last season in all facets of her game. She averaged 13.3 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 5.1 APG 3.3 SPG and 1.4 made three-pointers a game in the spring.
We’ve seen continuous improvement from Sweeney over the past two seasons, especially this summer with United AAU. She made herself known in a big way and that’s going to carry over once the season begins this winter.
No. 36: Rosie Scognamiglio Rosie Scognamiglio 5'10" | SG St. Rose | 2023 State NJ – 5-10 SG, St. Rose
Scognamiglio is already one of the best players in the Shore Conference as she’s demonstrated just trough one season on the floor. She really solidified herself as a key pieces on St. Rose for the next two seasons through her play in the spring.
She averaged 11.1 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.3 SPG and 1.8 made three-pointers a game last season, recording two 20-point games as well for St. Rose.
This is a team that is going to need her production and with this upcoming season being her first full season on varsity, she has a fantastic ability to get that much better overall. She’s a fantastic scorer and perimeter shooter as well as a strong defender, so the more she can hone in on those, the better she’ll get.
