Close to 60 girls competed in the tournament which took place on October 10th. All six teams in the event showed great determination and hustle. Throughout the day, each team played a total of five games. Here’s a look at teams 1 and #2.
Premier players on #1 team showed they could all play at the next level. They included Sia Jonet-Burley Sia Jonet-Burley 5'6" | CG Hamilton | 2023 State AZ , Micayla Silas, Amaya Washington Amaya Washington 5'10" | SF Dream City Christian Prep | 2023 State AZ , Caitlin Turnbow Caitlin Turnbow 5'9" Organ Mountain | 2024 AZ , and Morgan Evenson Morgan Evenson 5'9" | SG Gilbert | 2024 State AZ . Burley is a five-foot-six guard from Chandler Hamilton High School and a junior who showed deft ball-handling skills and a strong mid-range jump shot. Silas is a five-foot-nine guard/forward from Mesa High School and also a junior. She played outstanding defense throughout the event and is a tough rebounder on both ends of the court.
Amaya Washington Amaya Washington 5'10" | SF Dream City Christian Prep | 2023 State AZ is a five-foot-ten junior wing from Sandra Day O’Connor High School. She has a great sense of court awareness and an outstanding jump shot. Turnbow is a five-foot-nine sophomore guard/forward who plays for Organ Mountain High School. She was one of the outstanding players at the event displaying a number of inside moves. Evenson is a five-foot-nine sophomore from Gilbert High School who was very aggressive on offense, driving to the basket with strong determination. Each player has the potential to play at the college level.
Other players on the team included Perla Ruiz Perla Ruiz 5'3" Lake Stevens | 2023 AZ , Olivia Nicolas Olivia Nicolas 5'6" | PG Franklin, (Elk Grove) CA. | 2024 AZ , Mackensie Nielsen, Avery Graber Avery Graber 6'1" Paradise Valley | 2023 AZ , and Ella Bowman. Ruiz is a five-foot-three junior from Lake Stevens High School. Nicolas is a five-foot-six sophomore from Franklin/Elk Grove High School. Nielsen is a five-foot-ten junior from sunrise Mountain High School. Graber is a six-foot-one junior from Paradise Valley and Bowman is a five-foot-ten senior from Phh Prep in Phoenix.
Team #2 included an outstanding group: Nevaeh Cable Nevaeh Cable 5'8" Notre Dame Academy Toledo | 2023 AZ , Madison Pond Madison Pond 5'10" | SF Estrella Foothills | 2024 State AZ , Janessa Barcello Janessa Barcello 5'11" | C Sandra Day O'Connor | 2025 State AZ , Ava Pautz Ava Pautz 5'11" | SF Notre Dame Prep | 2024 State AZ and Michaela Lee Michaela Lee 6'0" | PF Deer Valley | 2023 State AZ . Cable is a five-foot-eight junior guard from Notre dame academy in Toledo, Ohio. She is an outstanding ball-handler and a consistent shooter. Pond is a five-foot-nine sophomore from Estrella Hills High School who has a good mid-range jumper and can shots from beyond the arc. Barcello is a five-foot-ten freshman from Millennium High School who will only continue to improve both on the offensive end as well as the defensive end. Pautz is a five-foot-ten junior who plays for Notre Dame Prep. She is a fierce rebounder and defender. Lee is a six-foot guard/forward who is a junior at Deer Valley High School with tremendous potential and outstanding court awareness.
Other players on team #2 included Melanie Castellon Melanie Castellon 5'0" John F Kennedy | 2022 AZ , Taylor Hitchcock Taylor Hitchcock 5'8" | CG Cienega | 2024 State AZ , Jordyn Decker Jordyn Decker 5'9" | SG University | 2023 State AZ , Zoe Duggan Zoe Duggan 5'3" | PG Pinnacle | 2022 State AZ , and Lizette Landry Lizette Landry 6'0" Wylie East | 2022 AZ . Castellon is a five-foot senior guard from John F Kennedy High School. Hitchcock is a five-foot-seven sophomore guard from Cienega High School. Decker is a five-foot-eight junior from University High School. Duggan is a five-foot-nine senior from Pinnacle High School and Landry is a six-foot senior from Wylie East High School.
Each individual player has the opportunity to play at the next level. For some, it will be Division I but for others, there’s Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college. Every player at the Expo 250. has the ability and capability to do so.
