In the following weeks, Prep Girls Hoops will be releasing a number of previews, analyzing each region in the Palmetto State as well as the teams and players to be on the lookout for. In a state that is such a girls hoops hub as South Carolina is, the competition is sure to be fierce.
How are we seeing things playing out in Region 2-A? Without further adieu, here is our outlook for this season.
Tyneisha Hickman Tyneisha Hickman 5'0" | PG McBee | 2022 State SC – McBee HS – 2022 – Hickman has compiled a great deal of accolades throughout her career. She is one of many throughout the Palmetto State in search of a fitting conclusion to their high school careers. At an even 5 feet, It can be easy for some scouts to look at her as someone who is undersized, even for the point guard position, but the results speak for themselves as Hickman is an extremely effective scorer. Any game where she does not tally at least a double-digit point output might as well be considered an off game by her standards. Hickman is also a former SCBCA All-State recipient.
Malaurie Martin – Lewisville HS – 2022 – Malaurie Martin has her sights set on closing her high school career in mighty and magnificent fashion. She is another two-sport athlete who also plays softball in addition to what she does on the basketball court. Martin helps her team’s offensive attack with her scoring capabilities. She will also knock down her share of 3-point shots. On the defensive side, Martin is a problem for opposing teams as well as she is a consistent threat to force opponents into turnovers. She recently announced a verbal commitment to St. Andrews University where she will continue her softball career.
Priscilla Andrews – Lewisville HS – 2023 – Speaking of Lewisville Lions … and speaking of two-sport athlete Lewisville Lions. As is the case with her teammate Martin, Andrews has a second sport as well away from basketball as she excels on the volleyball court. Just as her 5-foot-8 height helps her horizontal and vertical range when playing volleyball, it helps her rebounding capabilities as a basketball player on both ends of the floor. The work she has put in enabled her to rise from the Lions junior varsity team in 2019-20 and earned a berth on the varsity team last season.
Iyanna Hopkins – Johnson HS – 2023 – The Hornets are coming off a 2020-21 season where they qualified for a berth in the Class A playoffs. Having Hopkins returning should give head coach Tammy Brown’s team aspirations of even more postseason success. Hopkins is skilled in the rebounding game on either side of the court. She is also skilled at blocking shots, giving another dimension to how she plays on the defensive end of the floor. Hopkins gives a team plenty of minutes on the court. She will be part of a Hornets team that will feature a pair of other 2023s.
