Continue ReadingWednesday night, I attended the Fenwick Christmas Classic Championship game at Bishop Fenwick High School. This was a great matchup between Rockland High and Bishop Fenwick High, featuring a couple of D2 commits from the ’22 class. Rockland ended the night as champions with a dominating 60-38 win. Below are the standouts from the game.
Player of the Game:
Julia Elie Julia Elie 6'3" | PF Rockland | 2022 State New E – Rockland – 6’3’’ – PF – ’22
The Bentley committed power forward dominated the paint all game long. Finishing with a game-high 23 points, Elie was the easy choice for MVP of the Fenwick Christmas Classic. It was highly impressive to see a player score over 20 points with every field goal coming in the paint and on the block. That speaks to Elie’s discipline on the offensive end. You won’t see her settle for bad shots on the perimeter, and instead, she will trust her footwork and finishing ability and take full advantage of every one-on-one opportunity down low. Elie was aggressive on the glass and was strong defensively for Rockland. Overall, the Championship game was an excellent all-around performance from Elie, who only needed three quarters to put up her monster 23 point double-double.
Rockland Standouts:
Maggie Elie Maggie Elie 5'9" | CG Rockland | 2024 State New E – 5’10’’ CG – ’24
I thought Elie had a sneaky big performance against Bishop Fenwick. Her stat line won’t jump out at you, but I thought whenever Rockland needed a play in the second half, Elie made it. Whether it be a crucial rebound, an assist, or getting a defensive stop, Elie got the job done. She had several hockey assists and moved the ball well on offense, threw beautiful outlet passes, and, I thought, saw the floor better than anyone in the game on both teams.
Sydney Blaney Sydney Blaney CG Rockland | 2023 State New E – 5’7’’ – CG – ’23
Blaney’s defensive intensity flipped the game in the 2nd quarter. What started as a close back and forth battle between both teams became one-sided once Blaney locked in on Assumption commit Olivia Found Olivia Found 5'7" | CG Bishop Fenwick | 2022 State New E . Blaney’s lateral quickness plus physicality on defense wears her opponents down, and she helped shift the momentum in Rockland’s favor. Blaney also chipped in with 8 points, proving to be a significant factor on both ends of the court.
Bishop Fenwick Standout:
Olivia Found Olivia Found 5'7" | CG Bishop Fenwick | 2022 State New E – 5’6’’ – CG – ’22
Found is one of the most tenacious on-ball defenders I have seen and put her imprint on the game early with a couple of pickpocket steals that she turned into easy layups. Found does an excellent job frustrating ball-handlers and getting them out of their rhythm. Numerous times Found forced the opposing guard to pick up their dribble early and racked up a bunch of deflections. The Assumption commit finished with 9 points on the night.
