Continue ReadingIn addition to hosting a number of players and teams from across the Palmetto State, a number of teams from out of state also made the trek to Westwood High School in Blythewood (outside of Columbia) for the first annual Queens of the Castle Showcase.
Teams from North Carolina, Florida and Arizona all made the trek to the South Carolina Midlands for what was three days of exciting basketball.
Prep Girls Hoops was on hand for the festivities as well. Here is a look at those noteworthy names from the Tar Heel State that showed up to show out in the Palmetto State.
Brecken Snotherly Brecken Snotherly 5'11" | SG Eastern Randolph | 2023 State NC – 2023 – Winston Salem Christian Regional – When this review of Snotherly’s performances at Queens of the Castle began to be written, we think she made a few more 3-pointers. She went five for 10 from downtown in her team’s dominant performance over the South Carolina-based Irmo Yellow Jackets. Snotherly finished with 26 points in that game not to mention an 18-point outing against host school Westwood. She has recently received offers from East Tennessee State, USC Upstate and Appalachian State (which recently received a commitment from one of the Palmetto State’s premier players in First Baptist’s Alexia Grant). This just in … Snotherly made another trey.
Christiana Young Christiana Young 5'5" | PG Parkland | 2023 State NC – 2023 – Winston Salem Christian Regional – Speaking of scorers – one knows she can put points on the board when she has already reached the 1,000-point plateau. In Young’s case – she did so while young … as a freshman. She had 10 points in the Lions’ game against host school Westwood and 21 when Winston Salem Regional matched up against Irmo. Both contests resulted in Lions victories. In similar fashion to her teammate Snotherly, she too knows how to make things happen from 3-point range. She made four of five tries from behind the arc against the Yellow Jackets. This just in … Young just made another 3-pointer.
Chelsey Santana Chelsey Santana 5'11" | SF Winston Salem Christian | 2022 State NC – 2022 – Winston Salem Christian Regional – When Queens of the Castle host school Westwood matched up against the Lions, the Redhawks finished with a 31-21 rebounding edge. That is … a 31-21 rebounding edge against Santana. When one has a 5-foot-11 height advantage not to mention has a long wingspan as Santana does, she will win more than a few battles on the boards. To go along with those 21 rebounds, she also scored nine points and rejected four shots in the game with the Redhawks. Santana followed that up with 10-point, six rebound game in the Lions’ win over Irmo. This just in … Santana grabbed a few more boards.
Kristynn Knight Kristynn Knight 5'6" | PG Winston Salem Christian | 2022 State NC – 2022 – Winston Salem Christian National – Knight, in the final season of her high school basketball career has gone from one of South Carolina’s premier teams in defending three-time 3A SCISA champion Cardinal Newman to one of North Carolina’s premier teams in the Lions. She came off the bench in her team’s game with the Wildcats and was skilled in displaying her speed, midrange jump shooting, ball movement and fearlessness as she will weave her way through multiple defenders en route to the cup. Knight had nine points and two assists in the Lions’ win over Lexington.
Aysia Hinton Aysia Hinton 5'8" | CG Winston-Salem Christian National | 2023 NC – 2023 – Winston Salem Christian National – Winston Salem Christian sent two of its squads to the Columbia suburbs for this past weekend’s Queens of the Castle Showcase. Hinton was one of the notables from the Lions’ National team. In the Lions’ game with South Carolina-based Lexington, Hinton showcased stellar defense and ability to take and make shots from long range, corral steals and make plays near the rim. Hinton scored early and often in what was an emphatic win for Winston Salem National over the Wildcats as she scored 11 of her 17 points in the first half. She also had four steals and made five of her 10 tries from 3-point range.
Dominika Paurovac – 2023 – Winston Salem Christian National – In the Lions’ game against Lexington, Paurovac logged the most minutes of anyone – 27 to be exact which is a testament to how deep coach Delaney Rudd’s team is. She had 13 points in the Lions’ win over the Wildcats and went six out of 10 from the field. She displayed she can make 3-point attempts when she takes them. Paurovac did lots of work on the glass and much of that was on the offensive glass. Out of the seven rebounds that Paurovac hauled in for the game, six of those were offensive boards.
