If the first matchup between the two top teams in 4A District 2 is any indicator then we are in for another great game. Taos vs Moriarty was an entertaining competitive game that came down to the last seconds on February 12th. A back and forth battle of runs by both teams in the first-half led to some outstanding individual performances in the second half. Sophomore Kionamua Ely dominated the 3rd qtr in the paint and helped Taos take a double-digit lead. Junior Evann Segura Evann Segura 5'10" | PF Moriarty | 2023 State NM countered in the 4th with some clutch 3 point shots to help Moriarty come back to tie the game in the closing seconds at 52. With 3 seconds left on the clock, Ely grabbed a pass thrown to her at half court and assisted on a game-winning layup by senior Marika Moyer as time expired for the Taos Tigers. Let’s take a look at some of the standouts heading into the game tonight that could decide the district championship.
Moriarty High School
2023 SG Aneesa Chavez Aneesa Chavez SG Moriarty | 2023 State NM
Anessa Chavez is a quick and athletic guard averaging 14.9 points and 4.5 steals a game. Aneesa leads her team in both categories. The energy Aneesa brings to the team is impressive.
2023 SG/SF Evann Segura Evann Segura 5'10" | PF Moriarty | 2023 State NM
Evan Segura does well on the glass and can score at at all three levels. She leads the team in rebounding at 8.1 a game. She is also the second leading score at 13.5 a game. Evann showed the ability to hit big shots when her team needed them in the first matchup.
Taos High School
2022 PG/SG Madelynn Quintana
Madelynn Quintana handles the ball well and can get to the basket off the dribble as she scored 13 pts in the first meeting. Madelynn is also very active on defense and a team leader.
2022 SG Dahnyell Martinez
Dahnyell Martinez does a little of everything for the Tigers. Rebounds well scores and plays good defense as she had multiple blocks on players driving to the basket.
2024 PF Kionamua Ely
Kionamua Ely is a dominant force in the paint. Her ability to gain position on the block is a problem for any opposing player she goes against and hard to stop. Kionamua Ely plays with a chip on her shoulder on both ends of the court. Impressive first game vs Moriarty with 22 pts and 12 rebounds.
