Well, we’re now inching towards the end of the high school basketball season and there are some seniors that really deserve some recognition for what they have been able to accomplish this season. Before I discuss these players, since I will not be including statistics, I want to point out that all 5 of the following players are in the top 50 for both scoring and rebounding in Kentucky (per KHSAA).
Rylee Turner Rylee Turner 5'11" | SG Newport Central Catholic | 2022 State KY | SG | Newport Central Catholic
Ironically, what impressed me the most about Turner’s game was something that doesn’t always show up in the stats: defense. She has great hands and both times I was able to watch her play in person this season, she had multiple steals because she reads the passing lanes at a high level. She has a knack for drawing a lot of fouls and is a really good shot blocker as well. Turner has really good length, good handles, and puts herself in great rebounding positions. Despite playing in one of the toughest regions in the state, there is no other player that is in the top 10 for both points per game and rebounds per game, regardless of class, size, position, etc.
Jenna Lillard Jenna Lillard 5'11" | C Ludlow | 2022 State KY | C | Ludlow
Lillard has made her presence known throughout her high school career, and playing in the talent-filled 9th region, it is truly impressive that she has put up the numbers she has. She has great length and strength, but also really has good speed and footwork for a post. Really good shot blocker as well. Lillard really stretches a defense as she can knock them down from the 3-point line. Great form and quick release on her shot. After averaging a double-double in her junior season, Lillard has continued improving those numbers even more in her senior campaign.
Marleigh Reynolds | C | Trigg County
Reynolds really makes defenders work inside. She uses her physicality and strength so well and will post up her defender so hard that they have to put in some serious work to try to get around her. She has really good touch around the basket and has gotten herself into the top 50 for field goal percentage as well. I know you cannot give someone an assist for setting hard screens or posting strong inside, but she truly creates so much for her teammates in utilizing those strengths in her game.
Brianna Gallagher | F | Barbourville
Gallagher can really make things happen down low. She has great touch and makes some really good moves to the basket. She can shift her body to create around the basket. On the defensive end, she has really good footwork and is a really solid shot blocker.
Kelsie Woodard | C | Menifee County
Woodard makes some really good moves in the post. She goes up strong and isn’t afraid of contact. She really gets it done on both ends of the floor. I was impressed by how Woodard uses both hands so well. She is very consistent and has worked to get herself into the top 20 for field goal percentage in the state.
