Continue ReadingTuesday night, among other championship games going on in the state, is the South Jersey Group 4 sectional final between Cherokee and Shawnee. The two teams have faced off three previous times this season and will be facing off an unprecedented fourth time on Tuesday. Cherokee leads the season series 2-1, with Shawnee winning the last meeting between the two. Here are some can’t-miss prospects to watch in the game.
Gabby Recinto Gabby Recinto 5'10" | SF Cherokee | 2023 State NJ (Jr.) – 5-10 SF/PF, Cherokee
Starting out with the Chiefs, they are led by the junior forward Recinto, who has grown into a superstar-like presence for this team. Recinto had herself a great semifinal performance with a game-high 15 points as Cherokee went on to beat Lenape, 33-21. In her last five games, Recinto is averaging 14.8 PPG and looks unstoppable on the floor. Her post game is one of the best in the Olympic Conference and in South Jersey. It will be on full display as she goes against a tough defense in Shawnee on Tuesday.
Katie Fricker Katie Fricker SG Cherokee | 2022 State NJ (Sr.) – PG/SG, Cherokee
Fricker has been Cherokee’s leading scorer this season at just over 13.0 PPG and is the premier guard for the Chiefs. While listed as a point guard, Fricker dominates as a shooting guard, having herself quite the season from three-point territory. We saw last year just how good Fricker was as a three-point shooter and this season, she nearly averaged two made three-pointers a game. A combination of dribble-driving ability, great shooting and confidence at the foul line made this season her best offensive season in high school.
Delaney Jackson (Jr.) – SF, Cherokee
Jackson is part of a solid junior class along with Recinto and Courtney Furman, among other players in the junior class. She’s been a solid offensive option for Cherokee this season, averaging 4.0 PPG during the playoffs. Jackson can shoot from three and showcased that in the quarters against Toms River East, knocking down two three-pointers. She’s been more of a complimentary scorer thus far, but a few double-figure performances earlier in the year showed the ceiling she can have on the floor for the Chiefs.
Avery Kessler Avery Kessler SG Shawnee | 2023 State NJ (Jr.) – G/F, Shawnee
Kessler has been the go-to scorer for Shawnee, their playmaking leader this season without a doubt. She’s absolutely dominated so far, averaging nearly 14.0 PPG overall and is having herself quite the postseason. Through three games, Kessler is averaging 17.0 PPG and 3.7 SPG for the Renegades. Kessler has come into her own as a junior, evolving into an All-Conference player who has helped bring a winning culture back to Shawnee, who are now in the sectional final.
Nia Scott Nia Scott 6'1" | PF Shawnee | 2023 State NJ (Jr.) – 6-1 PF/C, Shawnee
Scott is one of two impact forwards for Shawnee this season, their main option in the middle and a player who once again nearly averaged a double-double on the year for the Renegades. The junior is an excellent post player and her presence on the floor has grown immensely over the past year and she’s done a great job recently using her longer wingspan to get to shots more easily. Through three games in the playoffs, Scott is averaging 14.7 PPG, 9.0 RPG and 2.3 BPG.
Nicole Miller (Jr.) – 5-11 SG/SF, Shawnee
Miller has proven herself to be a solid three-point option for Shawnee this entire season. She’s consistently finding scoring opportunities through the paint, midrange or from the perimeter. We’ve seen her utilize her size more frequently for close-range shots in or near the paint. Her heights has worked well toward her advantage and gives her that extra split-second to get a shot off in a closely-guarded situation.
