Our last list was definitely much more scattered when it comes to players on the list, so if you see players that moved down a lot compared to others, remember that with every updated list, we find new players to move around and we consider recent play in the mix. With that being said, here are the updated top five players in the 2023 class.
1. Hannah Hidalgo Hannah Hidalgo 5'7" | PG Paul VI | 2023 State NJ – 5-6 PG, Paul VI
It was incredibly tough to pick between Hidalgo or Brooks for the top junior prospect, but after the season this point guard had for Paul VI, there was no question for us that Hidalgo was the choice here. Looking at her body of work in her junior year, she averaged over 26 points a game for the Eagles and made things look incredibly easy on the offensive end. She can shoot well from three, but her bread and butter is her work in the interior, her post-up game, her dribble driving ability and her midrange game. Hidalgo finishes strong and then some and it’s worked out tremendously for her.
2. Zoe Brooks Zoe Brooks 5'8" | CG St. John Vianney | 2023 State NJ – 5-8 CG, St. John Vianney
After an incredible sophomore year at Trenton Catholic, Brooks decided to take her talents to join forces with Madison St. Rose Madison St. Rose 5'10" | PG St. John Vianney | 2022 State #65 Nation NJ at St. John Vianney. Two top prospects on one team can cause some major issues statewide and not surprisingly, the Lady Lancers ran away with the TOC crown, going 32-1, thanks to the top quality play of Brooks. She’s a passer first it seems like, but a player who can score at any facet of the game. She’s excellent from three and even better as a defender. Brooks is the perfect combination of speed, finesse and overall talent that makes her such a great prospect.
3. Rylie Theuerkauf Rylie Theuerkauf 5'7" | SG Tenafly | 2023 State NJ – 5-7 SG, Tenafly
Theuerkauf might not get the same amount of press playing for a school like Tenafly, but when you realize that she’s averaged 30 or more points a year for the past two years straight, you know there’s something special about her. Her statline is mind-boggling, especially when looking at her three-point production and ability to get to the foul line. This is a player throughout the duration of her high school career who has knocked down 5.3 free throws a game, including nearly six this season. Also, let’s not forget her shot-blocking increased and improved greatly as a junior.
4. Alexis Davis Alexis Davis 6'0" | SF Woodbury | 2023 State NJ – 5-11 SF, Woodbury
Davis had two fantastic seasons at Glassboro before deciding to transfer back home to play at Woodbury. Within her first eight games with the Thundering Herd, she had four 30-point games and seven double-doubles. There’s something different about watching Davis play, her intensity on the floor, but her effortless and soft touch on the ball as she drives to the rim or shoots from beyond the arc. This is a player who is going to make her mark in the paint and she is phenomenal at creating space for ample scoring opportunities.
5. Brynn McCurry Brynn McCurry 6'1" | PF Sparta | 2023 State NJ – 6-1 PF, Sparta
After a strong spring campaign, we were wondering whether or not McCurry could step her game up to another tier, and she did just that, averaging a career-high 20.6 PPG for Sparta. McCurry joined the 1000 point club and helped Sparta win a state championship for the first time in two decades. Her game is quite complete and she’s a triple-double candidate any time she steps on the floor. Her height gives her leverage and naturally creates mismatches on offense. On defense, that 6-1 frame allows her to deflect more shots and force opponents into bad shots and bad possessions.
