The Deep South was live and the girls from the tri-state put on a show for everyone to see. Let’s just say, Tennessee hoopers were set to leave their mark in Carolina.
The Deep South Classic, rich in history, had a plethora of teams competing in front of collegiate coaches. The prospects from the volunteer state, came out to compete, via form bragin rights, scholarship opportunities, and to put their squad on the map. Throughout the course of the weekend, our clubs took strides towards getting better. Our girls proved to those in attendance that they were worthy of collegiate looks and being mentioned as some of the best at the tournament. Either way, the respect factor once the tournament was over, clearly pointed towards the girls from our state. This tournament served as a phenomenal live period event that showcased our young ladies. In the midst of it all, our girls really showed people what Tennessee girls can do.
Here are a few notable standouts from the Deep South Classic.
Amelia Goehring Amelia Goehring 5'10" | SF Jackson Trinity Christian Academy | 2023 State TN (5’9/CG/Jr./ Trinity Christian/ Alabama Southern Starz)– Smooth, talented kid who is phenomenal with the ball in her hands. 3 level scoring threat who possesses a quick first step. Can come off screens, create for herself, playing the game at her speed, poised and controlled. Has a nice mid-range game and plays hard on the defensive end as well. Big time contributor. Multi-sport athlete who will be turning even more heads as the summer progresses.
Olivia Lee Olivia Lee 5'11" | SG Jackson Trinity Christian Academy | 2023 State TN (5’11/W/Jr. /Trinity Christian/ Alabama Southern Starz)– Another tremendous multi-sport athlete, she is hard nosed, clutch, and a true go-getter. This gym-rat was an anchor this past weekend, doing a little bit of everything to help her club. Scoring buckets, grabbing boards, lockdown D, everything, she was on it. Plays the game with poise, her athleticism allows her to take advantage of various situations. Whether it be on the perimeter or in the painted area, Olivia is going to find a way to exploit the other team’s weaknesses. 2022 Miss Tennessee finalists, this young lady is going to build up even more momentum as she plays throughout the summer.
Crysti’anna “Shaq” Whitehead (5’11/W/Jr./Memphis Business Academy/FBC Bounce Nation Memphis)– The Central Arkansas commit was out there doing her thing. Dialing it from deep and finishing at the cup, she averaged 14 pts per game to go along with three 3 balls per game.Talented kid who came out with something to prove and was a fierce opponent for her team’s matchups. Scored a game high 26 pts on Saturday, she helped wheel her team to victory as she was dominating both ends of the floor.
Jeurnei Wright Jeurnei Wright 5'9" | SF Whitehaven | 2023 State TN (5’7/CG/Jr./Whitehaven/FBC Bounce Nation Memphis)– repped the Bluff City for sure, Jeurnei had a solid weekend, putting up impressive numbers across the stat line. Had a Breakout Performance against the Mid-Atlantic Legacy, where she posted 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Talented kid who is a fierce competitor. Fast and relentless, such an awesome two-way player.
Sydnei Marshall (5’8/CG/Jr./Fayette-Ware/ FBC Bounce Nation Memphis)– Another lethal guard from the Bluff City. Sydnei had a great weekend where she outstanding as she contributed to her clubs success. Breakout Performer against Team SSB, she was all over the court. 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, let’s just say she was the firepower behind their victory. Phenomenal talent who plays the game with heart and hustle. Has relentless energy and isn’t afraid to do the little things.
