This past season the Region saw 3 teams all ranked in the top 20 for North Dakota Girls Basketball and had a second-place finish from the Grafton Spoilers in the State Championship. In this article we’ll be discussing 5 of the top talented guards that you might not know, but for sure need to keep your eyes and ears open for in the coming 2022-23 basketball season.
Rylen Burgess Rylen Burgess 5'9" | SG Cavalier | 2023 State ND – Cavalier – (5’9/SG/2023) – Rylen is a tall guard that can score the ball inside and out. She’s often a mismatch for smaller guards in which she’ll take them around the rim and isn’t afraid to show off a nice arsenal of post moves. Burgess is excellent in the open court normally finding holes with the defense and often gets forgotten about on the perimeter, which she makes opponents pay for in 3 points. Overall Burgess is a solid guard that will surely have an impactful season for Cavalier in her final season. If you’re an NAIA regionally you should keep your eye on this steal.
Ainsley Mclain Ainsley Mclain 5'9" | CG Grafton | 2023 State ND – Grafton – (5’9/CG/2023) – A top contributor on one of the top teams in the state of North Dakota. Ainsley Mclain Ainsley Mclain 5'9" | CG Grafton | 2023 State ND is a baller! She has the ability to break down defenders for quick drives to the rim or flows so well on the perimeter that it catches some defenders to fall asleep and she snipes them for 3. This past year she scored over 30 points against the reigning state champions Kindred and had multiple 20 bombs apart from that. Mclain isn’t just a standstill shooter either, it’s consistent off the dribble or screen. Watch her and the Spoilers work next year in the hunt for a state championship.
Olivia Dick Olivia Dick 5'4" | PG Thompson | 2023 State ND – Thompson – (5’5/PG/2023) – A great understanding of where to go with or without the ball in her hands. Top-down a high IQ player that limits mistakes and plays the point position with great poise. Olivia is a quick guard that has an even quicker shot that’s repetitious and will make any opposing team pay that leaves her open around the perimeter.
Rylee Satrom Rylee Satrom 5'9" | CG May-Port CG | 2024 State ND – May-Port CG – (5’7/SG/2024) – A talented 3 sport athlete that understands hard work. Rylee isn’t the flashiest player on the court, but she works her tail off for loose balls and has a consistent shot that’s repeatable. A true athlete in nature who if was only a basketball player would be one of the top players for May-Port CG no doubt about it. Satrom is strong, quick and understands the game at a mid-high level.
Kennison Azure Kennison Azure 5'11" | SG Hatton/Northwood | 2025 State ND – Hatton-Northwood – (5’10/CG/2025) – Kennison is a player that has flown under the radar for quite enough time. She’s tall, athletic, and can play at almost all 3 levels of the game. This year she made a huge splash for Hatton-Northwood and was a big piece of why they were receiving votes in the top 20 for North Dakota Girls Basketball. Azure averaged 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 3.0 steals, and 2.1 blocks per game. Correct me if I’m wrong, but those are all-state-worthy numbers. Did I mention that she is only a freshman? If you haven’t heard of Kennison Azure Kennison Azure 5'11" | SG Hatton/Northwood | 2025 State ND we’ll you better buckle up, because she’s gonna take you on one hell of a scoring drive.
