Team Griffin Elite 2023 Wernli outlasted a very strong Team Trae Young 2023 to capture the title. First, second, and third teams as well as a honorable mention list will be released to shine light on the play of so many players. Enjoy a look at the all-tournament second team selections.
Raegan McQuarters Raegan McQuarters 5'4" | PG Sapulpa | 2023 State OK , 5’5″, PG, Rogers (OK), Banshees 2023 – McQuarters’ teammates have to be on their toes all the time defensively because at any moment McQuarters will pick the pocket of the dribbler or shoot a passing lane and take off. Fast and athletic with the ball, she can be instant offense off the bounce. Opponents have to pay attention to her on both ends.
KK Peeler KK Peeler 5'0" | PG Edmond North | 2024 State OK , 5’2″, PG, Edmund North (OK), Team Buddy Buckets 2023, 2024 – If there was a player I would liken to a spark plug it would be Peeler. She turns over the offense to generate steals, gets the team going in transition, and creates for her team in the half court. Tough on both ends, Peeler’s threat to drive and get into the teeth of the defense frees her to knock down open threes off the catch or her own dribble. Really like her energy and bounce.
Kayla Jones Kayla Jones 6'0" | PF Norman | 2023 State OK , 6’0″, PF, Moore (OK), Team Trae Young 2023, 2023 – Jones had a terrific weekend especially in their big win over Team Buddy Buckets to reach the finals. Strong, long, and decisive with quick feet Jones showed a variety of interior moves after the catch. Jones also has good hands and when the team gets the transition game going she catches and finishes very well. A difference maker is her frame. It is solid. And when making quick moves within ten feet of the basket, rebounding and boxing out, or defending she is difficult to knock off mark.
Elizabeth Walton Elizabeth Walton 5'7" | PG The Village | 2023 State TX , 5’7″, PG, The Villages (TX), TNBA Houston 2023, 2023 – One of the things I wrote about Walton about day one interior scorers was how well she uses her body to protect shots. And she has a great frame in which to do it. She may not be the best ball handler on the floor but she uses her handles effectively to go around, over, and sometimes through an opponent to get to the hole. She plays just as physically on the other end as well. Walton transitions well, has solid speed and quickness, and is a clear floor leader for her team.
Karissa Smith Karissa Smith 5'9" | SG Appleton North | 2023 State WI , 5’9″, PG/SG, Appleton North (WI), Wisconsin Blaze 2023 Inferno, 2023 – Smith is a “do everything” type of player and floor leader. Defenses will chase her all over the floor because she can score at all three levels, finish with both hands, can perimeter and mid-range shots of a quick bounce, deliver quick yet soft passes off the bounce, and score with her back to the basket. Defensively she competes physically and uses her length to advantage to deflect passes. Smith runs the break well and transitions well. Just a player who does everything well.
