Prep Hoops Staff recently released the class of 2023 rankings. They take a lot of time, and watch a lot of games, before they update the rankings. Here I analyze 5 players from the top 10 of the New England 2023 rankings list. [player_tooltip player_id="267052" first="Oluchi" last="Okananwa"], Worcester Academy, HT 5’10, Class 2023, Position CG, AAU Lady Rivals, Ranking #1 Oluchi is the number 1 ranked player in the New England class of 2023 rankings for a reason. She is a very strong talent, and a playmaker. She already has multiple division 1 offers including Harvard, Villanova, and Mississippi State. She comes from a high school in Worcester Academy, that just had the likes of Alyiah Boston graduate a few years ago. Alyiah was the NCAA National player of the year, and on the National Championship South Caroline team. Oluchi is a very fundamentally sound player. She has a silky smooth pull up jumper, and can get going quickly. She plays much bigger than her size, and position. She impacts the game in so many ways. She is a great two player. She can guard multiple positions on defense, and is always in the right position at the right time. On offense she can run the point, be a scorer, and has great touch around the rim. Every thing she does on the court is with a purpose. She cuts hard, sets good screens, and is always looking to get the ball back, or get her teammates open. Oluchi is the real deal. [player_tooltip player_id="266716" first="Mackenzie" last="Nelson"], ST Luke’s, Position CG, HT 5’9, AAU NYC Exodus, Ranking #4 Mackenzie might be the top player in Connecticut for the class of 2023. She can just take over a game, and is a dominate scorer. She averaged over 20 points this past season, and had an amazing standout game with over 40 points. In a recent Nike EYBL circuit, she had an impressive stat line in a game, with 16 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Mackenzie is a high level finisher, with both hands. She can get to the basket on any defender, and is a wizard in transition. She plays with such high energy on both sides of the ball. She is able to score at all three levels, and also has great court vision. Mackenzie is a sure scholarship level player. [player_tooltip player_id="263910" first="Carys" last="Baker"], Loomis Chaffee, HT 6’1, Position SF, AAU NYC Exodus, Ranking #9 Carys has an excellent skill set for today’s basketball. A 6’1 forward, who can stretch the floor and shoot from three point range, and also has a good mix of an inside game as well. She can run the floor, and moves well. She had many game where she made multiple three pointers last season. One game last season she had a double with 29 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. Carys has the skills to play at the division 1 college level. [player_tooltip player_id="343173" first="Margo" last="Mattes"],Brookline, HT 5’10, Position SG, AAU Bay State Jaguars, Ranking #5 Margo is a high level shooting guard, who impacts the game in many ways. She is a very efficient player. She is a scorer, and had dominate scoring performances this past season. She has a very quick shot release, is is a high level three point shooter. She is very good in transition, and needs few dribbles to get up the court. Margo was one of the top players in the Bay State Conference this past season, and led the league averaging over 23 points per game. She has the ability to be a slasher, and score at the rim as well. She is a very tough player, who understands the game very well. On defense she plays much bigger than her size, and can guard players bigger than her. She is one of the best shot blocking guards I have seen in the area. Margo has the game, that will translate well to the division 1 college level. [player_tooltip player_id="184116" first="Lizzy" last="Gruber"], Gardiner, HT 6’4, Position PF, AAU Maine Attractions, Ranking #8 Lizzy is one of the top big’s in New England. She is a force down low, on both sides of the ball. She puts up huge numbers, and is very efficient. She has had games with over 25 rebounds. She has great length, and size, and moves so well. She can finish some very tough contested shots at rim. She has a very fundamental skill set in the post. She has great footwork, and very soft touch. She can be a back to the basket player, and also now is showing the ability to shoot from the outside. She is a very good shot blocker, and her length makes it very tough for players to shoot over her. She has multiple divisions 1 offers already, and should do well at that level.
