This week marks the beginning of the July “live” periods, and more than 100 teams from Indiana find themselves South of the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky, for the Run 4 Roses tournament. To follow are five ladies who I thought stood out for one reason or another with their play when I was able to see them on Wednesday, July 6th.

– Kristin is a very deceiving, highly effective point guard prospect. She is much bouncier and more explosive in most directions than you might assume. She has really nice length, wiry strength, and she plays with a feisty toughness. She always has her head up scanning the floor, and she often finds teammates through small windows. Additionally, she can bury shot after shot from the perimeter, plus she’s an effortful defender who can really bother opponents with her length and quickness.

– I saw Kylie a lot when she was younger, but it has been some time since my last viewing of her. She is a quick/fast, scrappy little point guard prospect. She has gotten stronger and doesn’t mind physicality, she can create havoc defensively, and she really bothers opposing ball-handlers, whether it’s in the half-court or from 84-feet. Offensively, she is creative and crafty, she does a nice job of collapsing defensives and finding teammates, but she is also a capable shooter/scorer herself.

– Mia has always been an active and athletic forward prospect, and she plays with a really nice motor. This Summer, she looks noticeably stronger, she’s winning 50/50 balls a lot more often, and she’s absorbing contact better and finishing more consistently around the basket. She can also do some things with the ball around the perimeter, like knock down the occasional jumper or break down a slower, bigger defender at times. I also really like her versatility and sense of urgency defensively.

– Faith has really blown up this year, and a lot of it has to do with her consistent play due to added growth and strength. I don’t know that she’s done growing, but she is significantly taller, stronger, and more explosive in all directions. She battles on the interior and can occasionally post, but she’s also skilled facing the basket, she can knock down the occasional 3-pointer, and she does a nice job at her size of efficiently using the dribble. She’s also sitting down and defending the ball well.

– Bryn has gotten a little taller since the Winter, she has a long frame, broad shoulders, and she’s a fluid athlete in all directions. She is a lefty, making her a little odd to defend off the bounce, but she handles it equally well either direction. She plays with good vision, she’s a dangerous shooter from outside if she gets any rhythm, and she has a really nice all-around feel for the game. I’ll be curious to see if she grows any more, but she does have the potential to get much stronger.
