The Orlando Splash was held July 20-22 and was loaded with talent from the state of Florida. While there was a number of talented players, here is our starting five in the class of 2023 from the Orlando Splash event!
Simply put Waldon can run PG for any team I coach. On a squad loaded with talent on the ECU Family 2023 team, Waldon does not come off the court. She runs the team, handles pressure, has a great assist to turnover ratio, distributes the ball to scorers, and plays aggressive defense. She is tough, gritty, and extremely consistent. She was a big part of her teams success and is a leader on and off the court.
Taliah Scott Taliah Scott 5’8″ | SG St. John’s Country Day | 2023 State #31 Nation FL for FGB CW is a bucket better. The University of Arkansas verbal commit has an extensive skill set – scoring off the bounce, knocking down 3s, playing downhill attacking the rim, and showcasing a nasty step back. She is a great 1v1 player with multiple moves and counters that can score 30+ any game!
Emma Risch Emma Risch 6’2″ | PG Palm Bay | 2023 State #23 Nation FL is a 6’2 skilled guard who has excellent balance as a facilitator, ball handler and a play maker. She scored at all 3 levels: from 3, mid-range off the bounce, and at the rim. Risch shoots a high percentage from 3 and does great job getting to free throw line. Her height and length allow her to do things on the court that very few point guards in the country can do. She is headed to Notre Dame next year.
Ugwah was a new face for me as she was previously in Arizona and was just cleared to play in July after hurting her knee and missing the last 8 months. Ugwah did not do any one thing great but she was really solid all around. She has a strong, fit build. She played hard on both ends of the floor. She was an aggressive rebounder on both the offensive and defensive glass, was very active, and got her hands on a lot of balls. In a class that is short on post players 6’1 and above, Ugwah is a bit undersized but for someone coming off injury she was active and impressive and should get the attention of a number of college coaches.
Ngodu was the Miami Suns most consistent player in the Orlando Splash having a steady presence in the paint, around the rim, and on the boards. She is an aggressive and active rebounder on both ends of the floor who gets her hand on a lot of balls and goes and gets balls out of her area. She finished well in the paint, and did a really good job sealing and scoring from low post position. While she filled up the stat sheet with a number of double doubles on the offensive end, I was most impressed by her on the defensive end. She was very active defending the low block, working to ¾ and front those that she was guarding, and used her athleticism to get a number of deflections and steals on entry passes. She has been one of the summers biggest stock risers, picking up over 30 D1 scholarship offers.
