Throughout these past several weeks, Prep Girls Hoops has put a number of geographical regions in the state in the spotlight via our county-by-county rankings.
Next up on our agenda are a couple of counties in the Lowcountry – Colleton and Dorchester. A team from Dorchester qualified for last year’s 5A state championship game. Here is a look at our 2023 rankings for the two counties.
There is not much gray area on if White is good or not – she has shown that throughout her career and why she has established herself as a must-watch standout at 5A Fort Dorchester. She can score at will and one way she gets this done is by fearlessly attacking the rim. White displays plenty of agility and craftiness with the ball in her hands and is unafraid of contact that can put her at the free throw line. She understands when to pass and when to score and can come away with steals as an effective defender.
Chisolm has been a home run for Colleton County athletics – after all one of her alternative sports of choice is softball and she also has track experience. A combo guard for the 4A Cougars, she is gifted as a scorer and a rebounder – hence why she will have games where she manages double-doubles. Chisolm will take advantage of if an opposing ball carrier coughs up the rock and she creates additional possessions for her team via her defense. If any word could be used to describe how she plays, it would be hustle. When she does commit, one wonders if it will be for basketball, track or softball.
Similar to Chisolm, Curry also has a wealth of athletic experience through not only basketball but also via track and field. She comes through in many ways defensively with the number of steals she compiles. At an even six feet, she gets plenty of work done in the painted area. What makes Curry such as superb rebounder is how she can collect boards that other fours and fives probably would not be able to. Between her and fellow big Dianna Blake Dianna Blake 6’1″ | PF Ashley Ridge | 2024 State SC (a 2024), the Swamp Foxes are once again poised to be a tough team to contend with in the interior and low post.
As skilled as she is as a basketball player, one would not think it itself is a secondary sport. For Osborne, that is the case given what she has done as a tennis player and soccer player – including playing for the U17 England national team. Basketball-wise, she stands at 5-foot-11 and the low post serves as the bread and butter for this athletic four forward. Osborne has no issues finding spacing near the rim and runs with a great deal of efficiency. Because of SCISA’s updated classification, the Panthers will now participate as a 4A school in Region 3.
