Continue ReadingI caught quite a few incoming freshmen at the Alamo City Hoops #I35HSShowcase and there were several I didn’t get a chance to see, missing numbers or no class listed and I must emphasize yet again the importance of having not only rosters but non-erroneous ones so based on who I saw, here are some of the standouts, many were at the PGH Texas Showcase showing out there as well
Shaniya Fox-5’9 SF (Antonian)
Fox was one of the standouts at the PGH Texas Freshman Showcase, after all, she’s long and athletic, that Is the base and her slicing down the lanes from every angle imaginable was nice, and so were her finishes after the lick. She also did a good job hitting the boards, on b both ends and scoring on putbacks. Good timing to block, alter and (or) deflect shots and played solid defense
Arianna Davis-5’7 CG (Antonian)
Davis has some scary upside yet she’s really good right now, especially at not only creating her shot but knocking it down with a hand in her face. She has shown she can hit the mid to long range before, so that didn’t surprise me here, as well as the “catch and shoot” with accuracy. Nice handles, attacks off the dribble, and finishes strongly
Yaniska Mestre- 5’7 SG (Davenport)
Mestre was a pleasant surprise, she’s heady and understands how to get hers in the flow yet she also plays within herself, for the novice, that means she doesn’t force shots or anything else, except the offensive player into traps. She showed she could knock down shots, especially from BTA
Jazelle Scott-5’5 PG (Medina Valley)
Scott uses her athleticism well on both ends. Her “on the ball” defense baseline to baseline helped create turnovers and she also used it offensively to attack the basket and finish strongly after contact. Her midrange pull-up is nice, and so is her court vision as she threaded the needle under pressure for assists
Breanna Breland Breanna Breland 5'4" | SG Medina Valley High School | 2026 TX – 5’6 CG (Medina Valley)
Breland continues to add more pieces and watching her play the passing lane over and over had me smiling. She creates her shot under pressure and uses a deceptive first step to get to the rim, usually giving acrobatic finishes because of her body control and she can drop the jumper
Janea Walls-5’5 CG (Medina Valley)
Walls will have defenders banging their heads against the WALLS in the not-too-distant future because she has a whole lot of ways to score. Mid to long range is a yes, stop and pop in transition, the explosive first step to attack from numerous angles and all within the flow of the game
Arriana Davis-5’9 SF (Lancaster)
Davis is long and athletic, if you forgot how I opened it up, that is the base so as she adds intangibles to being that, her scoring from off the dribble is one of her HUGE pluses. Her first step can be devastating, she finishes strongly but her battling for rebounds on both ends as well as solid timing to block shots are all very nice
Jaela Jones-5’6 PG (Lancaster)
Jones handling the ball under pressure was a treat and she understands how and when to push it, yet controlling the tempo is always good when running the 1. She has good court vision, hit teammates in the set or in transition and she scored both off the dribble as well as from outside, but her step back JUST DID IT for me
Kyla Cooper-5’9 SF (Lancaster)
Cooper is long and athletic, one more time, that is the base and she did a good job of rebounding, on both ends, and scored on putbacks as well as around the rim. She’s also active and that played a part in her applying plenty of heat on the defensive end. It also enabled her to read the floor and play the passing lane
Aaliyah Mancha-5’5 SG (McCollum)
Mancha creates her shot nicely under pressure and this enabled her to not only get her shot off against taller defenders but knock it down. The midrange is nice, and so is the long-range but she did a good job of using that same creativity to attack the basket off the dribble
Madyson Mitchell Madyson Mitchell 5'8" | SG Taylor | 2026 State TX – 5’8 SG (Shoemaker)
Mitchell was one of the standouts at the PGH Texas Freshman Showcase and I was also impressed at what I saw her do there as well as here. I love seeing things you can’t teach and her defense just keeps grabbing at me since she enjoys playing it. She also dove for loose balls and scored both off the dribble and with the short jumper
Yasmeen Schmidt-6’1 SG/SF (Cornerstone)
Schmidt has so many things going for her starting with she’s long and athletic but peep this one, she stands over The Magic Number, which is 6’0, and can drop the mid to long range almost effortlessly. I love players that fit that profile but importantly, so do college coaches, and they offer scholarships
