Gritty beats pretty. There’s no question that players who work hard, hustle consistently and aren’t afraid to play a physical brand of basketball can change the course of a game. So, too, can vocal competitors who inspire their teammates to do better. On Saturday at Hopkins, these 5 players stood out as Game Changers at the Prep Girls Hoops Top 250 Expo.
There are a lot of aspects of a player’s’ arsenal that can have an out-sized impact on the course of game, some of which you can control, some that you cannot. For Madison, it is her athleticism. She’s part racehorse, part kangaroo, part gazelle, all athlete. With flat-out speed, terrific leaping ability and natural grace on a basketball court, she can use those assets to change a game in a matter of seconds. Throw in a highly-tuned motor and a little killer instinct and Malecha was definitely a game changer on Saturday.
I think we should give Ella a lifetime pass to our Prep Girls Hoops Hard Hat All Star team. She just embodies what that squad is all about – the sweat and grime of the basketball grind. The queen of sandpaper. The guardian of grit. Whatever you want to call her, nobody plays harder from start to finish than Ella does. She’s also got speed, skill and the ability to score. Put all of that together and Kletti is a game changer night in and night out.

When Jenna first showed up on the high school basketball scene it was her shooting that grabbed everyone’s attention. That’s not surprising given her prodigious range, quick release and the ability to get hot, hot, hot. That can change a game in a hurry. But it doesn’t take long to see there is so much more to Jenna’s game than that. She’s tough, plays physical, fights hard for every inch, and isn’t afraid to get a little dirt under her fingernails. Those assets combined made her a game changer at the Expo.

Red Wing makes a classic boot called the Iron Ranger. With steel-toed toughness, leather that lasts forever, a time-tested design and a hard-earned reputation for reliability, it wears the ‘Iron Ranger’ moniker very well. Come to think of it, so does Hali. Make no mistake, the hard-nosed competitor from Mountain Iron-Buhl has speed, skill and the ability to score, but it is her grit and gumption that defines who she is as a player. Whatever it takes to get the job done is what Savela is going to do.
Ella is one of the most passionate players we’ve scouted over the past seven years. She’s loud, she’s enthusiastic and she wears her heart on her sleeve. There’s no doubting how she feels about what’s happening on the court at any given moment. For her it works. She moves fast, plays hard and is always giving everything she has to help her team win. We’ve seen it for the past couple of years and we certainly saw it on Saturday.
